Chapter 2 – The Footage No One Was Supposed to See

The living room felt colder than the nursery.
No one spoke as we gathered around the large television mounted above the stone fireplace. Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but it did nothing to warm the tension hanging in the room.
Beatrice stood with her arms folded, her jaw set with the confidence of someone who believed she was about to be proven right.
Vanessa paced near the grand piano, tapping her manicured nails against her phone.
Daniel remained unusually quiet.
Mara stood near the doorway, saying nothing. She wasn't nervous.
She was watching.
Watching all of them.
I connected my phone to the television.
The screen turned black.
Then the timestamp appeared.
2:07 a.m.
"This is from the nursery camera," Beatrice said confidently.
I shook my head.
"No."
The video began.
Unlike the visible camera mounted above the door, this angle came from the antique picture frame sitting on Leo's bookshelf.
No one had ever suspected it.
The room appeared peaceful.
Leo slept quietly beneath his blue blanket, clutching his teddy bear.
A few seconds later, the bedroom door opened.
Mara walked inside.
"There!" Vanessa shouted.
"I told you!"
The footage showed Mara approaching Leo's bedside.
She picked up the medicine bottle.
Then she frowned.
Instead of giving Leo the medication, she held the bottle beneath the reading lamp.
She examined the label carefully.
Her expression changed.
She looked toward the hallway.
Then, without touching Leo, she slipped the bottle into her apron pocket and quietly left the room.
Beatrice pointed triumphantly.
"She stole it!"
"No," I replied.
"Keep watching."
The room fell silent again.
Two minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
Then—
The bedroom door opened a second time.
This time...
It wasn't Mara.
It was Vanessa.
Her face appeared calm as she quietly stepped inside.
She looked directly toward the visible nursery camera.
Then smiled.
A slow...
Confident...
Smile.
My stomach tightened.
She knew exactly where the visible camera was.
She believed it was the only one.
Vanessa walked to Leo's bed and reached into her robe pocket.
She removed another medicine bottle.
It looked identical to the first one.
Carefully, she placed it on the nightstand where the original bottle had been.
Then she leaned over Leo.
For a terrifying second, it looked as though she might inject something into him.
Instead, she slid a small syringe beneath the folded breakfast napkin resting on the bedside tray prepared for the morning nurse.
She adjusted the blanket.
Smoothed Leo's hair.
Then quietly walked out.
The room around us became deathly still.
Vanessa's face turned pale.
"That's not what it looks like."
"No?" I asked calmly.
She swallowed hard.
"You edited that."
"I own one of the most advanced security companies in the state," I answered.
"If I edited surveillance footage that would be discovered in court within minutes."
Daniel stared at his wife.
"Vanessa..."
She grabbed his arm.
"Don't believe this."
But another voice interrupted.
"Keep playing."
It was Mara.
I looked at her.
"There's more."
I nodded.
"There is."
The footage resumed.
Three minutes later...
The bedroom door opened once again.
This time...
It was my mother.
Beatrice entered quietly, carrying a small silver key.
She never looked toward the camera.
She walked directly to Leo's medication drawer.
Unlocked it.
Removed a folded envelope.
Opened it.
Counted several pages.
Then placed everything back exactly as she had found it.
She locked the drawer.
Slipped the key into her pocket.
And walked away.
Beatrice stared at the television.
Her face had gone completely white.
"I..."
She couldn't finish.
"What were you looking for?" I asked.
"I wasn't—"
"The drawer only contains Leo's medical records."
Silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Daniel slowly stepped away from his wife.
For the first time since we were children, he looked at our mother not with trust...
But with suspicion.
Mara finally spoke.
"They weren't acting alone."
Everyone turned toward her.
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked.
She looked directly at the frozen image still displayed on the television.
"The dosage label was changed by Vanessa."
She shifted her eyes to Beatrice.
"But someone had to know exactly which medication would be delivered that night."
A long silence followed.
Then Mara asked the one question that made every heartbeat in the room stop.
"Who else in this house has access to Leo's treatment schedule?"
My eyes slowly moved toward the hallway leading to my late father's private office.
There was only one person who had always insisted on handling every document related to our family's estate...
My father's attorney.
And at that exact moment, the front doorbell rang.
The housekeeper walked in, looking uneasy.
"Sir..."
She hesitated before continuing.
"Mr. Howard is here."
The family attorney had arrived.
Half an hour earlier than expected.

And judging by the look on his face through the glass front door...
He had no idea his carefully constructed plan was already beginning to collapse.
