Chapter 10: The Dawn of a New Reality

The first pale rays of autumn sunlight filtered through the reinforced glass of the emergency room window, painting long, golden bars across the tiled floor of Room 3. Leo stirred, letting out a soft sigh as he stretched his small arms above his head. His big blue eyes blinked open, slowly focusing on the unfamiliar white ceiling before shifting to the side chair where Mark sat slumped forward, fast asleep with his chin resting on his chest.

Leo pulled the white sheet down, clutching his green plastic dinosaur tightly in his right hand. He swung his legs over the edge of the examination table, his bare feet touching the cool floor. The sudden movement caused the heart monitor lead to pull slightly, producing a soft electronic chirp.

Mark’s eyes snapped open instantly, the hyper-vigilance of the past twelve hours reasserting itself without a second of transition. He bolted upright, his hands reaching out instinctively to steady the boy. "Leo? Hey, buddy. How do you feel?"

Leo looked up, offering a small, tentative smile that reached his eyes for the first time since the ordeal began. "I'm okay, Dad. My tummy feels a little empty, but I'm okay."

Mark let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding, wrapping his arms around Leo and lifting him down from the table into a warm, protective embrace. The lingering fear that the entire night had been a cruel hallucination finally dissolved completely in the reality of the boy's warm weight against his chest.

"We're going home today, buddy," Mark whispered into the messy blonde curls. "Back to our house. And we're going to make pancakes—big ones with lots of syrup."

Just then, the door opened, and Officer Miller stepped into the room, holding a paper cup of black coffee in one hand and a manila folder in the other. He looked tired, bearing the dark circles under his eyes of a man who had spent the entire night writing incident reports and processing a suspect.

"Morning, Leo. Morning, Mark," Miller greeted them quietly, closing the door behind him. "Glad to see everyone’s looking a bit more rested."

"What's the status on Vance?" Mark asked directly, setting Leo back down on his feet while keeping a protective hand on the boy's shoulder.

Miller sighed, taking a sip of his coffee before answering. "He’s being arraigned this morning down at the municipal court. The charges are felony criminal confinement and child endangerment. Given his history as a former city worker who knew that annex was structurally compromised, the district attorney isn't offering any leniency. He claims it was an accident, but the physical evidence and the rusted lock mechanism point to a severe lack of basic human responsibility. He won't be wandering near any children's play areas for a very long time."

Leo looked up at the officer, his small fingers tightening around the green toy dinosaur. He didn't say anything, but the slight relaxation of his shoulders showed that the knowledge of the man's removal brought a tangible sense of safety.
