The living room of the small duplex was transformed. In the corner by the front window stood a magnificent seven-foot Fraser fir tree, its branches draped in warm white fairy lights and decorated with a collection of handmade ornaments—including a scuffed green plastic dinosaur hanging proudly from a sturdy branch near the center. The warm, amber glow of the lights illuminated the room, casting soft patterns across the wooden floor and reflecting gently in the glass of the newly secured front windows.

Mark sat comfortably in his favorite armchair with a cup of hot cocoa cooling on the side table, watching Leo lie on his stomach on the braided rug, carefully sketching a new spaceship adventure in his spiral-bound notebook. The quiet hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen and the occasional crackle of the baseboard heater provided a peaceful, domestic soundtrack to the evening.

There were no more echoes of distant iron doors or terrified whispers through dead telephone lines.
