Chapter 19 - THE COAT

Two years after the bathroom incident, Margaret found the beige wool coat in a storage box.
She called Elena.
“Come over.”
Elena arrived ten minutes later.
Margaret stood in the bedroom holding it.
The same coat.
The fabric where her fingers once clutched it shut still showed slight stretching near the buttons.
Elena’s chest tightened.
“Throw it away.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Maybe.”
She put it on.
Elena watched carefully.
Margaret buttoned it.
Then unbuttoned it herself.
Slowly.
Her hands did not shake.
She took it off.
Folded it.
Then placed it in a donation bag.
Elena started crying.
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
“Really?”
“I’m allowed.”
“Yes.”
Then Margaret hugged her.
For two years, Elena had thought the coat symbolized concealment.
Now she understood it had also been armor.
Bad armor.
Thin armor.
But the only thing Margaret had control over in that bathroom before Elena arrived.
Margaret whispered:
“I was so ashamed.”
“Of what?”
“That I let it happen.”
Elena pulled back.
“You did not ‘let’ restraint happen.”
“I let Julian believe my no didn’t matter.”
“That part is different.”
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”

The family had become precise about blame.
It saved them.
