Chapter 8 - WHY ARTHUR CHOSE JULIAN
Helen Ward met Elena in a quiet restaurant near the courthouse.
She was seventy-two.
Sharp.
Retired.
Still annoyed at Arthur after death.
“He was a brilliant coward,” Helen said.
Elena almost smiled.
“That sounds right.”
Arthur knew Julian took excessive risks.
Knew Elena was more conservative.
Knew they fought.
So why choose Julian as successor CEO?
Because Arthur believed the company needed aggression.
Elena wanted restructuring.
Compliance cleanup.
Reduced leverage.
Arthur called it timidity.
Then, late in life, he changed his mind.
Not enough to remove Julian.
Enough to create protective checks.
“He wanted Julian to run the company,” Helen said, “but not own the family.”
That was the purpose of Margaret’s appointment power and Elena’s protective trust.
Separate operating control from family wealth.
Elena stared at her coffee.
“So Dad trusted Julian with the company and me with the brakes.”
Helen smiled.
“Crude. Accurate.”
“Why didn’t he tell us?”
“Because Arthur thought disclosure created conflict.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“He loved secrets that were supposed to prevent explosions.”
“Most secrets do.”
Helen gave her a sealed copy of a letter Arthur wrote but never sent.
To Elena.
She opened it alone later.
You were right about Harbridge. I did not say so because I had already built too much authority around Julian.
Harbridge was the acquisition that caused Elena to leave Vance Biomedical.
She had opposed it.
Arthur overruled.
Julian supported.
The deal later cost millions.
Arthur never apologized.
Now, from beyond the grave, he admitted she was right.
The letter continued.
I punished you for making me uncertain. That was weakness, not leadership.
Elena stopped reading.
She cried for ten minutes.
Then continued.
Arthur explained the protective trust.
Explained why Margaret held power.
Explained that Elena should never use it for revenge against Julian.
If you ever receive control, remember: restraint is the point.
Elena folded the letter.
That sentence irritated her most.
Even dead, Arthur was still giving orders.
But he was also right.
This could not become sibling revenge.
Margaret needed safety.
The company needed governance.
Julian needed accountability.
Different problems.
Different tools.
That distinction would matter soon.
