Chapter 1

I pulled into my ex-husband’s driveway just as his new wife dumped an entire bucket of ice water over our nine-year-old daughter—and what happened when he came home seconds later changed everything.

Lily was sitting on the back steps, soaked from head to toe and shaking so hard her teeth were clicking.

Vanessa stood over her holding an empty plastic bucket.

“Maybe next time you’ll learn to respect me,” she snapped.

I froze beside my car.

“What did you just do to my daughter?”

Vanessa turned toward me without a trace of guilt.

“She needed discipline.”

Lily looked at me with tears mixed into the freezing water running down her face.

“Mom, I only asked if I could call Dad.”

I rushed toward her and wrapped my jacket around her shoulders.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You baby her. That’s why she acts like this.”

“This isn’t discipline.”

I reached for my phone.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t get to control what happens in my house.”

Before I could answer, headlights swept across the backyard fence.

Ryan’s truck pulled into the driveway.

My ex-husband climbed out wearing his work clothes, then stopped when he saw Lily trembling in my arms.

“What happened?”

Lily couldn’t even answer.

Ryan looked at the bucket.

Then at Vanessa.

His face changed.

“Did you pour that on her?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was being disrespectful.”

Ryan walked straight toward her.

“Ryan, don’t start.”

He slapped her across the face.

Vanessa stumbled backward, staring at him in shock.

Then Ryan grabbed the empty bucket, filled it from the outdoor cooler beside the patio, and dumped the ice water directly over Vanessa’s head.

She screamed.

Ryan threw the bucket onto the grass.

“That’s exactly what my daughter felt.”

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa slowly wiped the water from her face.

“You just made the biggest mistake of your life.”

Ryan pointed toward the house.

“Pack your things.”

But Vanessa didn’t move.

Instead, she started laughing.

A strange, quiet laugh that made my stomach tighten.

Then she looked directly at me.

“You really think this is about Lily?”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa walked inside and returned holding a thick envelope I had never seen before.

She tossed it onto the patio table.

My name was written across the front.

Ryan stared at it.

I stared at him.

And then Lily whispered something that made both of us turn toward her.

“She told me Dad would lose everything if I ever told you what I found.”
