Chapter 3

Ryan’s face went completely still.
I thought I had misheard her.
Then Vanessa walked toward the patio table, picked up one of the loose pages, and held it in the air.
“The petition you signed.”
Ryan stared at the paper.
“I never signed a custody petition.”
“Sure you did.”
“I did not.”
“You signed it in your office.”
His expression shifted.
I saw the memory hit him.
Vanessa saw it too.
“Blue folder,” she said. “Thursday night.”
Ryan whispered something under his breath.
I stepped toward him.
“What did you sign?”
He dragged both hands over his face.
“She brought paperwork from the accountant.”
Vanessa smiled.
“At least that’s what I told you.”
My anger rose so fast I had to force myself to stay calm.
Lily was beside me.
This was not the place.
This was not the moment.
“Ryan,” I said quietly. “Did you read it?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
There it was.
One word.
One devastating word.
Vanessa had committed the fraud.
But Ryan had opened the door with carelessness.
“Mom?”
Lily squeezed my fingers.
I crouched beside her.
“We’re leaving now.”
“Is Dad going to take me away from you?”
My heart cracked.
“No.”
“But Vanessa said—”
“No one is taking you away from me tonight.”
I wrapped my arms around her.
“And none of this is your fault.”
Ryan looked at the ground.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“You two are unbelievable.”
I stood.
“What’s unbelievable is that you think threatening a nine-year-old makes you powerful.”
“You think she’s innocent?”
Ryan snapped around.
“She is nine.”
“She goes through my things.”
“She was looking for a sweater.”
“She questions me constantly.”
“She’s a child!”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“And she hates me because Emily taught her to.”
I stared at her.
“Lily wanted to like you.”
Vanessa scoffed.
“She never gave me a chance.”
“She made you a birthday card.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“She asked me whether it would be weird if she called you her bonus mom one day.”
Ryan looked sharply at me.
Even Vanessa seemed surprised.
“She said that?”
“She did.”
I looked at my daughter.
“She wanted another person to love her. That was all.”
Lily started crying.
Vanessa looked away.
For one second, something like guilt crossed her face.
Then it vanished.
A police cruiser turned onto the street.
Blue lights flashed silently against the fence.
Vanessa took a step backward.
Ryan saw it.
“Don’t even think about leaving.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Now you’re helping her?”
“I’m helping Lily.”
Two officers came through the side gate.
I explained what I had witnessed.
I showed them Lily’s soaked clothes.
I showed them the documents.
I told them about the threats.
I also told them Ryan had struck Vanessa and poured water over her.
Ryan looked at me but didn’t argue.
He shouldn’t have.
One officer separated Ryan from Vanessa.
The other spoke to me and Lily.
Vanessa immediately changed.
Her anger disappeared.
Her voice softened.
She hugged herself dramatically.
“He attacked me.”
The officer nodded.
“We’ll speak with everyone.”
“He hit me in the face.”
“I saw it,” I said.
Vanessa looked surprised.
“You’re admitting that?”
“Of course I am.”
Ryan’s eyes met mine.
I continued.
“What Vanessa did to Lily was wrong. What Ryan did to Vanessa was also wrong. One does not erase the other.”
The officer wrote everything down.
Ryan gave a slow nod.
“I shouldn’t have hit her.”
Vanessa stared at him.
He kept talking.
“I saw my kid shaking and I lost control. That’s on me.”
The officer took him aside.
I didn’t know what would happen next.
But for the first time that night, I felt like at least one adult had stopped making excuses.
I took Lily to the car.
Before we could leave, Vanessa called after us.
“Emily!”
I turned.
She was standing near the patio doors beside the second officer.
“You might want to check your email.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because the hearing is Wednesday.”
My stomach tightened.
“What hearing?”
“The emergency custody hearing.”
Ryan heard her.
“What?”
Vanessa smiled.
“You wanted me to take care of the paperwork, remember?”
Ryan looked at the officer.
“I need my phone.”
The officer allowed him to retrieve it from his pocket.
Ryan scrolled quickly.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
“Emily.”
I already knew from his expression.
“What?”
“There’s an email from a law firm.”
My pulse hammered.
He turned the screen toward me.
I didn’t read everything.
I only saw enough.
A court date.
Wednesday.
Petition regarding temporary custody.
Allegations against me.
I felt as if the ground had tilted.
“This is impossible.”
Vanessa shrugged.
“Apparently not.”
Ryan stared at her.
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth.”
“You don’t know anything about Emily’s parenting.”
“Oh, I know plenty.”
“Like what?”
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“She leaves Lily alone.”
“That’s a lie.”
“She drinks.”
“I barely drink.”
“She has men sleeping over.”
My mouth fell open.
Ryan looked disgusted.
“Stop.”
“She screams at Lily.”
“Stop!”
“And she has emotional problems.”
I took a step forward.
Ryan moved between us, not because I was going to hit her, but because he knew I was at my limit.
Vanessa smiled.
“See? Aggressive.”
I laughed once.
I couldn’t help it.
The whole thing was so calculated.
The officer looked at Vanessa.
“Ma’am, that’s enough.”
I took Lily away.
At urgent care, my sister Hannah met us in the lobby.
The moment Lily saw her, she ran into her arms.
Hannah looked at me over Lily’s head.
“What happened?”
I shook my head.
“Not here.”
A nurse brought Lily back.
Her body temperature had returned close to normal by then.
The doctor checked her carefully.
No serious physical injury.
But when he asked Lily whether she felt safe returning to her father’s house, she went silent.
That silence hurt more than any answer could have.
Finally she whispered, “Only if Vanessa isn’t there.”
The doctor documented it.
I asked for copies of everything.
By midnight, Lily was asleep in my bed wearing warm pajamas and holding the stuffed rabbit she had owned since she was four.
Hannah sat with me at the kitchen table.
The envelope lay between us.
She read every page twice.
“This is bigger than a family fight.”
“I know.”
“She forged your signature.”
“I know.”
“She took money from Lily.”
“I know.”
“And she filed a custody petition using Ryan’s signature?”
“He says he didn’t know what he was signing.”
Hannah gave me a look.
“I know.”
“That’s not much better.”
“I know.”
My phone buzzed.
Ryan.
I stared at his name.
Hannah said, “Answer it.”
I put him on speaker.
“Hello?”
His voice was tired.
“Are you and Lily okay?”
“She’s asleep.”
“Did the doctor say she’s okay?”
“Physically, yes.”
He was silent.
Then he said, “The police made Vanessa leave.”
I looked at Hannah.
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is she coming back?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I changed the locks.”
I rubbed my forehead.
“You need to understand something. Lily isn’t staying there again until this gets sorted out.”
“I understand.”
I hadn’t expected that.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not going to fight me?”
“No.”
He sounded broken.
“I signed those papers, Emily.”
My anger returned.
“You told me that.”
“No. I mean I found the copy.”
I sat straighter.
“What copy?”
“Vanessa left one in the office.”
Hannah leaned closer.
Ryan continued.
“It isn’t just the custody petition.”
My stomach tightened.
“What else did you sign?”
“A statement.”
“What kind of statement?”
His voice cracked.
“It says I personally witnessed you neglecting Lily.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then why is your signature on it?”
“I didn’t read it.”
Hannah muttered, “Unbelievable.”
Ryan heard her.
“She’s right.”
I didn’t answer.
He continued.
“I’ve already emailed the lawyer and told him the petition was filed under false pretenses.”
“What did he say?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Ryan, Wednesday is in two days.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then he said, “There’s something else.”
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
“What now?”
“I checked the business account.”
“And?”
“The money from Lily’s trust didn’t go there.”
I looked at Hannah.
“What do you mean?”
“Vanessa told us she transferred the money to save the company.”
“Yes.”
“She lied.”
“Where did it go?”
“I don’t know. The company received thirty thousand from an account I thought belonged to Vanessa.”
“How much is missing from Lily’s trust?”
“Sixty-seven thousand.”
“So where is the other thirty-seven?”
“I don’t know.”
“And the loan against my house?”
“I don’t know.”
His voice lowered.
“But I found a wire transfer.”
“To whom?”
“A company called Northstar Holdings.”
I grabbed a pen.
“Who owns it?”
“I searched the state registry.”
Ryan stopped.
“Ryan?”
May you like
His next words changed the entire direction of the night.
“Vanessa does.”
