CHAPTER 1 Room 218

CHAPTER 1
Room 218
I came back to Mercy Hill Hospital earlier than expected, carrying two cups of coffee.
I thought I'd surprise my mother.
Instead, I opened the door to Room 218 and found myself screaming.
"Marissa! What are you doing?!"
My wife spun around.
The pillow was still clutched tightly in both of her hands.
Beneath it, my mother fought desperately for air.
In that single heartbeat, my marriage shattered.
The woman I had loved suddenly looked like the greatest danger my mother had ever faced.
And what I would uncover afterward was even worse.
For several long seconds, nobody moved.
The room felt frozen in time.
My mother, Eleanor, clutched at her chest, gasping violently as I stepped between her and Marissa without thinking.
Marissa's eyes darted toward the hallway.
Toward the open doorway.
Toward an escape.
"David... please, listen to me," she pleaded.
"No."
My voice came out calm.
Far too calm.
The kind of calm that only exists after something inside a person has completely broken.
"I saw what you were doing."
"You think you did."
"I know exactly what I saw."
My mother reached toward me with trembling fingers.
"David..."
I immediately dropped to my knees beside her bed.
"It's okay, Mom. I'm here."
She shook her head weakly.
"No..."
Her frightened eyes shifted toward Marissa.
Pure terror filled them.
The sight made my stomach twist.
My mother had survived cancer.
She had survived poverty.
She had survived decades of sacrifice.
Yet somehow...
She looked more terrified of my wife than she had ever looked of any illness.
Only moments later, a nurse rushed into the room.
Then another.
Within minutes, hospital security arrived.
Marissa changed instantly.
Tears filled her eyes on cue.
Perfectly timed.
"Oh, thank goodness you're here," she cried.
The nurse frowned.
"What happened?"
"My mother-in-law couldn't breathe."
I slowly stood.
"She's lying."
The room fell silent.
Every pair of eyes turned toward me.
"She was suffocating my mother with a pillow."
Marissa gasped dramatically.
"David!"
The security officers exchanged uncertain glances.
It was a serious accusation.
But so was hers.
Without proof, it looked like one person's word against another's.
At least...
That's what everyone believed.
Then my mother spoke.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
But every word was perfectly clear.
"He's telling the truth."
The room erupted into motion.
One security officer immediately escorted Marissa into the hallway.
Another contacted hospital administration.
I watched my wife walk away.
She didn't look frightened.
She looked furious.
And somehow...
That terrified me even more.
May you like
Because innocent people fear consequences.
Marissa only seemed angry that someone had stopped her.
