CHAPTER 3 Secrets Buried Beneath the Lies

CHAPTER 3

Secrets Buried Beneath the Lies

I couldn't sleep that night.

Every memory of my marriage replayed itself inside my head, but now every moment looked different.

Every argument.

Every complaint.

Every cold glance Marissa had thrown at my mother.

I'd always believed it was frustration.

Stress.

Financial pressure.

Now it looked like something far darker.

The next morning, I hired a private investigator.

Her name was Rachel Monroe.

A former detective with a reputation for never overlooking the smallest detail.

She listened quietly as I explained everything.

When I finished, she simply nodded.

"If she's hiding something," Rachel said, "I'll find it."

She kept her promise.

Just one week later, Rachel called me into her office.

A thick file rested on her desk.

"You should sit down."

The first pages were financial records.

Credit cards.

Personal loans.

Lines of credit.

Accounts I'd never seen before.

The total made my stomach drop.

More than three hundred thousand dollars in debt.

I stared at the paperwork in disbelief.

"That can't be right."

Rachel slid another document toward me.

"It is."

I handled almost all of our household finances.

Every paycheck.

Every mortgage payment.

Every monthly bill.

How had she hidden something this enormous?

Rachel answered the question before I could ask it.

"Most of these accounts were opened without your knowledge."

I rubbed my forehead.

"I had no idea..."

"I believe that's exactly how she wanted it."

She opened another folder.

"And that's not all."

Inside were records of phone calls and appointments.

Marissa had contacted multiple real estate attorneys over the past several months.

She'd asked detailed questions about transferring property owned by elderly people.

Power of attorney.

Inheritance disputes.

Estate planning.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

She hadn't been acting on impulse.

She'd been planning.

Carefully.

Patiently.

For months.

Then Rachel placed a single photograph in front of me.

I froze.

Marissa sat across from a man I'd never seen before.

They weren't discussing business.

They were smiling.

Laughing.

Leaning toward each other like two people who shared far more than conversation.

Rachel quietly slid more photographs across the desk.

Dinner dates.

Luxury hotels.

Weekend trips.

Each image felt like another knife twisting deeper into my chest.

My hands trembled.

The marriage I believed in had never truly existed.

It had been built on deception from the very beginning.

That evening, I confronted her.

I expected denial.

Excuses.

Anything.

Instead...

Marissa smiled.

Not with embarrassment.

Not with regret.

She actually laughed.

"You still don't get it, do you?"

I stared at her.

"Get what?"

She leaned forward.

"Your mother controlled your life for years."

"My mother sacrificed everything for me."

"Exactly."

Her smile turned cold.

"She made sure you'd always feel guilty."

For the first time...

I wasn't looking at the woman I'd married.

I was looking at a complete stranger.

Someone who saw kindness as weakness.

Love as leverage.

Family as an opportunity to exploit.

Then her expression hardened.

"This isn't over."

It didn't sound like a warning.

It sounded like a promise.

May you like

And somehow...

That frightened me more than anything I'd discovered so far.
