Chapter 1 - The Shattered Homecoming

The air in the back service kitchen felt thick with the stench of rancid grease, damp concrete, and bitter despair. It was a suffocating world completely separate from the glittering crystal chandeliers and expensive jazz music vibrating through the front walls of the mansion.
I stood paralyzed in the doorway. My hands, calloused and scarred from five years of handling heavy steel pipes under the scorching Saudi sun, hung heavily at my sides. On the floor lay the gold bracelet, the fine chocolates, and the bright box of toys I had bought with such pure excitement during my layover. The box had split open, scattering its contents onto the filthy floorboards.
You can see the exact, heartbreaking moment of my return in 32.jpg. There I was, completely stunned, my eyes wide with a mixture of horror and mounting fury. On the right, my beautiful Sarah was kneeling on the cold floor, her clothes literally in tatters, a torn sleeve exposing her terribly thin shoulder. She was holding a cracked, chipped plate containing a meager portion of pale, rinsed, spoiled rice, guiding it gently toward our six-year-old son, Jamie. Jamie looked up with hollow, haunted eyes, his small face streaked with dirt, his childhood completely stolen from him.
And in the center of the doorway stood the architects of this living nightmare. My sister, Prudence, wore an elegant silk cocktail dress and a pearl necklace, her hands gripping a silver platter bearing a perfectly roasted, golden chicken meant for the wealthy party guests inside. Behind her stood my mother, Gertrude, dressed in a dark, expensive velvet gown, her face frozen in absolute terror as she locked eyes with me.
"Arthur..." Gertrude choked out, the name escaping her lips like a curse. The rich, haughty color drained from her cheeks in real-time, leaving her looking old, pale, and caught.
"Get away from them," I said. My voice didn't sound like mine. It was a low, guttural growl that vibrated from the very pit of my stomach.
Prudence let out a sharp gasp, the heavy silver platter trembling violently in her manicured hands. A piece of the roasted chicken slid off the side, landing with a dull thud onto the dirty floor right near the scattered chocolates. "Arthur, you... you weren't supposed to be home until next year! The contract—"
"The contract ended early," I stepped forward, my heavy work boots crushing a piece of the premium chocolate underfoot. The noise made both women flinch violently. "Every month, I sent $1,800. Every single month for sixty months. I gave up my health, my youth, and every moment of my son's childhood so they could live in luxury. And you put them in the dirt?"
Sarah let out a soft, broken sob, hiding her face in Jamie's messy hair. Jamie didn't cry. He just wrapped his small, clad arms tighter around his mother's neck, shielding her from the monsters in silk dresses.

"Arthur, let me explain!" Gertrude pleaded, taking an instinctive step backward into the warm, bright hallway that led to the mansion's main dining hall. "Sarah... Sarah was incompetent! She didn't know how to manage a household of this size! We had to take over, for the sake of the family name! We kept them out here so she wouldn't embarrass us in front of our high-society friends!"
"Your friends?" I roared, the sheer volume of my voice cutting through the distant party music like a lightning strike. "Inside my house? Paid for with my blood and sweat?!"
