Chapter 17 - BACK INSIDE

The estate smelled different at night.
Not like Daniel.
Not like Vivian.
Like rain, old wood, and the faint antiseptic used by Carter House staff.
Julian waited in the library.
Rachel sat beside him, wrists tied.
A pistol rested against her shoulder.
“You came,” he said.
“You knew I would.”
“Daniel said the same thing about you.”
Emily did not react.
Julian resembled neither Daniel nor Richard.
But the way he occupied the room was Vivian.
Stillness used as threat.
“You were supposed to marry Daniel, surrender the trust, and disappear into treatment,” Julian said. “Everything after that was waste.”
“You mean my survival.”
“I mean disorder.”
Emily held the forged revocation papers.
“You want the house?”
“I want recognition.”
“From Vivian?”
His face tightened.
“She protected me.”
“She erased you.”
“She kept me hidden because Richard was weak.”
“She placed you in Harbor Clinic’s foster pipeline.”
“For safety.”
“She used you because Daniel failed.”
Julian struck Rachel across the face.
“Do not speak about my mother.”
Rachel lifted her head.
“She spoke about you enough on tape.”
Julian froze.
Emily continued.
“Vivian never planned to give you the house. She planned to let Daniel and you destroy each other.”
“That is a lie.”
“I brought the recording.”
She raised a small drive.
It contained Vivian telling Harold Vale that neither son would control the estate.
Julian ordered her to play it.
Emily connected the drive to the library television.
Vivian’s voice filled the room.
“Julian needs promises. Daniel needs praise. Neither understands ownership.”
Julian stared.
The gun lowered slightly.
Then another voice played.
Harold Vale asked, “Which son inherits?”
Vivian laughed.
“No son.”
Julian shot the television.
Rachel screamed.
The bullet shattered the screen.
Agents outside heard it through Emily’s watch.
Julian grabbed Emily and pressed the gun beneath her jaw.
“She lied because Vale was recording.”
“She lied to everyone.”
“She came to see me.”
“To direct you.”
“She said I was the strong one.”
“She said what made you useful.”
His breathing changed.
For the first time, certainty left his face.
Emily recognized the moment.
Daniel had shown the same fear when the envelope was found.
Powerful people often told the truth through panic.
Julian dragged Emily toward the basement.
He intended to access the secure server and delete the transfer records.
Rachel twisted her wrists against the zip ties.
Blood ran down her hand.
As Julian reached the hidden stairwell, the front door burst open.
Federal agents entered.
Julian fired once.
The shot struck the wall.
Rachel threw herself sideways, knocking his arm.
Emily drove her elbow into his ribs.
The gun fell down the basement stairs.
Julian grabbed Emily’s throat.
Then David Hale emerged from the service corridor.
He had entered through an old utility tunnel marked on Richard’s plans.
“Let her go,” David said.
Julian stared at him.
“Brother.”
“Not in the way you mean.”
“You chose them.”
“I chose not to become her.”
Julian lunged.
The brothers collided.
Agents restrained Julian after a violent struggle.
As they handcuffed him, he looked at Emily.
“This house ruined us.”
Emily answered, “No. Vivian did. Then you chose to continue.”
Rachel was taken to the hospital.
Her injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
The original trust was recovered from Julian’s coat.
Folded.
Burned.
Still legible.
But the final shock came in the basement.
Behind the server cabinet, investigators found a hidden compartment installed by Ethan.
Inside were photographs of women who had lived at Carter House.
One photograph was marked with a red X.
The woman had disappeared six months earlier.
May you like
Her name was Hannah Reed.
And police had never been told she was missing.
