Chapter 27 - VIVIAN’S GRANDDAUGHTER
When Evelyn was ten, a seventeen-year-old girl arrived at Carter House asking for Emily.
Her name was Sophie Harrington.
Daniel’s daughter.
Emily had not known she existed.
Sophie’s mother, Lauren Price, met Daniel after his release. Their relationship lasted two years.
Daniel never told Emily.
Sophie said her mother died in a car accident three months earlier.
Daniel had temporary custody.
Then he disappeared again.
This time voluntarily.
He left Sophie with a note:
Go to Emily. She knows how to survive our family.
Emily felt anger so sharp she could barely speak.
Daniel had turned her into a solution without consent.
Sophie carried a backpack and one legal folder.
Inside was evidence that Lauren’s accident might not have been accidental.
She had been investigating assets Stephen Cole hid before arrest.
Daniel believed surviving members of The Key Society killed her.
He took Sophie into hiding.
Then he vanished to draw attention away.
Ortiz, now fully retired but incapable of ignoring the case, reviewed the file.
Lauren’s brakes had been cut.
A former Key Society financier remained free.
His name was Marcus Wren, the judge’s nephew.
He had controlled the planned Carter House receivership.
Marcus was believed to be in Europe.
Sophie received messages demanding Lauren’s files.
Daniel had hidden them inside a childhood memory book.
Emily asked, “Where is your father now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he hurt you?”
“No.”
“Did he control you?”
Sophie hesitated.
“He checked everything. Phone. Friends. Clothes. He said safety required it.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Daniel had learned not to hit.
He had not learned not to control.
Sophie was placed with an independent guardian while the threat was investigated.
Emily did not become her custodian.
She offered support without taking authority.
The memory book contained banking codes linking Marcus Wren to offshore funds and three contract killings.
Federal agents tracked him to Canada.
Daniel was found nearby, injured after confronting Marcus alone.
Again, he tried to become the rescuer.
Again, he nearly died.
Marcus was arrested.
Lauren’s death was prosecuted.
Sophie received access to her mother’s family.
Daniel faced no new criminal charges, but the court restricted contact until he completed intensive treatment.
At the hearing, Sophie spoke.
“I love my father. I also need him to understand that fear does not make every decision his.”
Daniel cried.
He did not argue.
The judge asked Sophie what arrangement she wanted.
She requested supervised contact.
Not separation.
Not full custody.
Choice.
Emily watched from the back row.
Afterward, Daniel approached only as far as the order allowed.
“Thank you,” he said.
“I did not do this for you.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
For once, he left without asking for more.
Sophie became part of the broader Carter House community.
Not Emily’s daughter.
Not Daniel’s redemption.
A young woman with her own story.
Evelyn liked her immediately.
They exchanged mismatched bracelets and complained about adults.
Emily watched them laugh.
