Chapter 2: The Woman They Never Bothered to Know

The front door closed behind me.
For several seconds, no one inside the mansion moved.
Lucas stood frozen, staring at the empty doorway as though he could still force me to come back.
He couldn't.
Outside, my assistant opened the rear door of the waiting sedan.
"The board has assembled, Ms. Bennett."
I nodded and stepped inside.
As the convoy pulled away, my phone began vibrating nonstop.
Lucas.
Again.
And again.
I ignored every call.
Twenty minutes later, I entered the executive boardroom on the top floor of Bennett Capital.
Twelve directors rose to their feet.
No one spoke until I reached the head of the table.
My assistant handed me the updated acquisition report.
"Ninety-one percent of voting shareholders have approved the emergency resolution."
I signed the final page.
"Effective immediately," the chairman announced, "the former executive management team of Sterling Industries is removed from operational authority."
The decision was unanimous.
No applause followed.
Only quiet professionalism.
Because this meeting had never been about revenge.
It was about protecting thousands of employees whose jobs depended on responsible leadership.
Meanwhile, across the city, Lucas repeatedly tried to access the company's executive network.
Every password failed.
Every authorization disappeared.
His office access card was disabled.
Corporate accounts were frozen pending board review.
His name no longer appeared on the executive directory.
For the first time since inheriting his father's company...
Lucas realized he had confused ownership with privilege.
May you like
He had possessed the title.
He had never controlled the future.
