Chapter 11 - The Oxygen Mask

The ladder extended with a loud, hydraulic hiss, locking against the outer sill of the bedroom window.
A firefighter climbed up quickly, grabbing me under my arms and guiding me down the rungs into the cool grass below.
The moment my feet touched the lawn, paramedics rushed forward, wrapping a heavy yellow blanket around my shoulders and placing an oxygen mask over my mouth and nose.
I collapsed onto the grass, coughing violently, my chest heaving as clean air filled my lungs.
My mother rushed toward the gurney, her face contorted in a dramatic display of maternal agony.
“Caitlyn! Oh, my baby!” she shrieked, reaching her hands out toward me in front of three watching neighbors and two police officers. “Thank God you’re alive!”
I raised my arm and shoved her hands away with enough force to make her stumble back two paces.
“Don't touch me,” I rasped beneath the oxygen mask, my voice raw and rough.
The two police officers stepped between us, looking from my soot-covered face to my mother’s spotless clothes.
“Ma'am, step back and let the medical crew work,” the lead officer, Officer Miller, commanded firmly.
My mother instantly pulled her hands back to her chest, her eyes widening with fake hurt. “Officer, please understand... my daughter is extremely confused. She suffers from severe psychological delusions...”

I pulled the oxygen mask off my face, staring directly at Officer Miller.
“Check my bedroom door,” I said, my voice cutting through the noise of the water hoses. “Check the brass deadbolt on the outside of the frame.”
