Chapter 14 - The Recorded Truth

Officer Miller took the flash drive, his eyes widening slightly. “You recorded the dinner?”

“I’ve recorded every interaction with them for three years,” I replied flatly. “Because I knew a day would come when her word wouldn't be enough to destroy mine.”

Ten minutes later, inside the lead patrol vehicle, Officer Miller plugged the flash drive into his laptop.

The audio file played clearly through the car speakers:

The clink of silverware. My mother’s clinical voice reading from my forged medical files.

The sharp sound of the bedroom door slamming shut.

The heavy, mechanical click of the exterior deadbolt turning.

My frantic pounding against the wood from inside the room.

And then, crystal clear, Jessica’s cold voice: “Let her burn.”

Followed immediately by my mother’s soft, chilling laugh.

Officer Miller closed his laptop. He stepped out of the patrol car, walked over to the rear passenger door, and pulled it wide open.

He reached inside, taking my mother’s wrist, pulling her out onto the pavement.

“Deborah Monroe,” Officer Miller declared, his voice echoing across the quiet neighborhood street. “You are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, arson, and child endangerment.”
