PART 3 – THE HEARING

Nine days disappeared faster than Emily thought possible.

Victoria transformed the mansion into a stage.

Every visitor saw the same carefully rehearsed performance.

The devoted mother-in-law.

The fragile wife.

The concerned family.

Emily noticed the pattern immediately.

Whenever guests arrived, Victoria insisted that Emily remain in her wheelchair.

If Emily tried standing with her walker, Victoria rushed over dramatically.

"Careful, sweetheart."

"You'll fall."

"Don't push yourself."

To everyone else, it looked like kindness.

To Emily, it felt like a prison.

Three days before the hearing, Victoria announced another doctor's appointment.

"It's just a routine neurological evaluation."

Emily smiled politely.

"I'm feeling much better."

Victoria's expression remained pleasant.

"I'm sure you are."

"But the court needs updated medical records."

Emily's stomach tightened.

So this was it.

The final piece of evidence.

The clinic looked nothing like the hospital where Emily had recovered after the accident.

It occupied the top floor of a private medical building downtown.

Everything felt expensive.

Quiet.

Almost too perfect.

Victoria checked them in by name.

"We're expected," she said.

A nurse immediately escorted them inside.

Emily noticed something strange.

No one asked for her identification.

No one confirmed her insurance.

It was as though the appointment had been prepared long before she arrived.

Dr. Steven Collins greeted them with a warm smile.

"Mrs. Lawson."

He shook Victoria's hand before acknowledging Emily.

"It's good to finally meet you."

Emily offered a polite smile.

"You too."

The doctor spent nearly an hour asking questions.

Simple ones.

"What year is it?"

"Who's the current president?"

"Can you count backward from one hundred?"

Emily answered every question correctly.

Then the interview changed.

Without warning, Victoria interrupted.

"Doctor..."

She sighed dramatically.

"She has good moments."

"But yesterday she insisted she'd been sending emails that never existed."

Emily looked at her.

"Because I did."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"See?"

The doctor made another note.

Emily realized what was happening.

Every answer she gave was being filtered through Victoria's commentary.

Reality no longer mattered.

Only perception.

When the examination ended, Dr. Collins asked Victoria to wait outside.

"I'd like a few minutes alone with Mrs. Lawson."

The door closed.

The doctor leaned forward.

"Emily..."

His tone softened.

"Off the record..."

She looked at him carefully.

"Yes?"

"I've reviewed your previous medical history."

"And?"

"You don't present like someone suffering severe cognitive decline."

Emily felt a flicker of hope.

"But?"

Dr. Collins hesitated.

"Your current medications concern me."

"So do mine."

He lowered his voice.

"Who manages them?"

"My mother-in-law."

He nodded slowly.

"I thought so."

Emily stared at him.

"Can you help me?"

Before he could answer...

The office door opened without knocking.

Victoria stepped inside.

"There you are."

She smiled sweetly.

"I was worried."

Dr. Collins immediately straightened in his chair.

His expression became unreadable.

Emily noticed.

Someone had frightened him.

Back at the mansion, Maria was waiting.

"How did it go?"

Emily closed the office door.

"I think the doctor knows something."

"Will he tell the court?"

Emily wasn't sure.

"I don't know."

Maria sighed.

"Then we need stronger evidence."

Emily nodded.

"I agree."

That night one of the hidden cameras captured another meeting inside Victoria's study.

Richard Benson returned carrying a thick stack of legal documents.

Victoria poured him coffee.

"Everything ready?"

Richard nodded.

"The judge usually signs temporary guardianship if the neurologist recommends it."

"And Collins?"

"He'll submit his report tomorrow."

Victoria smiled.

"Excellent."

Richard looked uneasy.

"What about the medication?"

Victoria waved dismissively.

"She'll be completely disoriented by the hearing."

Richard lowered his voice.

"Are you sure increasing the dosage is safe?"

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"I didn't ask for your medical opinion."

Richard remained silent.

Victoria leaned closer.

"I only need one signature."

"After that..."

"...Emily won't have the legal authority to challenge anything."

Maria immediately copied the footage onto two encrypted drives.

Emily watched every second.

"This alone could destroy her."

Maria shook her head.

"Not unless someone believes us."

The next morning another surprise arrived.

A courier delivered a package addressed to Emily.

Victoria intercepted it before Emily could reach the front door.

"Oh..."

Victoria smiled.

"I'll leave this in your office."

Hours later the package still hadn't appeared.

Emily waited until Victoria left for lunch.

Then she and Maria searched the study.

Inside a locked drawer sat the unopened envelope.

Emily carefully photographed everything before opening it.

The package came from her father's investment firm.

Inside were documents confirming that Emily—not Ryan—controlled fifty-two percent of Lawson Holdings through a family trust.

If Victoria obtained guardianship...

She would effectively gain control over the company itself.

Emily slowly looked up.

"This was never about protecting Ryan."

Maria nodded.

"It was about taking the company."

That evening Emily finally received another chance to contact her husband.

While Victoria attended a charity dinner, Maria bypassed the home's communication system.

Ryan answered on the second ring.

"Emily?"

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Oh my God..."

"I've been trying to reach you for weeks."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"So have I."

"What happened?"

"I don't have much time."

She spoke quickly.

"Someone blocked our calls."

Silence.

Then Ryan whispered...

"What?"

"My emails never reached you."

"Emily..."

"I need you to listen carefully."

She told him everything.

The medication.

The forged reports.

The guardianship petition.

The hidden cameras.

The toxicology results.

Ryan didn't interrupt once.

When she finished...

The line remained silent.

Finally he spoke.

"My mother wouldn't..."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I know how it sounds."

"But I have proof."

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"I'll book the first flight home."

Emily looked toward the hallway.

"No."

"Why?"

"If she knows you're coming..."

"...she'll destroy the evidence."

Ryan hesitated.

"What do you want me to do?"

Emily's voice became calm.

"Come home."

"But don't tell anyone."

"I'll be there before the hearing."

The following afternoon, Victoria walked into Emily's bedroom carrying an elegant navy-blue dress.

"I bought this for court."

Emily smiled politely.

"It's beautiful."

"I want the judge to see how well you're being cared for."

Emily looked into her eyes.

"And if the judge asks what I want?"

Victoria's smile never changed.

"You'll tell him exactly what we've practiced."

Emily frowned.

"I don't remember practicing."

Victoria walked closer.

"You will after tomorrow's medication."

She placed the dress on the bed.

Then quietly left the room.

Emily stared after her.

For the first time...

Victoria had stopped pretending.

Very early the next morning, Maria slipped into the library to retrieve the backup hard drive containing every recording they had gathered.

The shelf behind the old law books was empty.

The drive was gone.

Maria's heart skipped a beat.

Someone had found it.

Before she could react, the library lights switched on.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

Holding the hard drive.

"I've been wondering..."

Victoria smiled slowly.

"...who's been spying on me."

Maria's face turned pale.

Neither woman moved.

Because both of them knew...

May you like

The hearing was less than twenty-four hours away.

And now, every piece of evidence Emily had spent weeks collecting was in Victoria's hands.
