PART 4 – EVERYTHING FALLS APART

Maria didn't panic.

Not immediately.

She simply stared at the hard drive in Victoria's hand.

Victoria smiled with quiet satisfaction.

"I always wondered why you suddenly became so interested in my study."

Maria remained silent.

"Looking for something?"

Still nothing.

Victoria slowly held up the drive between two fingers.

"I found this hidden behind the law books."

Her smile widened.

"You should have picked a better hiding place."

Maria's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Weeks of evidence...

Gone.

Or so Victoria believed.

"You've worked for this family for twenty-three years," Victoria said calmly.

"I trusted you."

Maria finally spoke.

"No."

"You trusted that no one would ever question you."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You've become a liability."

She reached into her purse and removed an envelope.

"Your employment is terminated effective immediately."

Maria accepted it without looking.

"You've made a mistake."

Victoria laughed.

"I don't think so."

"I'm not talking about firing me."

Maria looked directly into her eyes.

"I'm talking about underestimating Emily."

For the first time, Victoria's smile disappeared.

Within an hour, Maria's belongings had been packed into two cardboard boxes.

One of the security guards escorted her to the front gate.

Emily watched helplessly from the second-floor window.

Maria never looked back.

But just before getting into the taxi...

She placed one hand over her heart.

Then subtly pointed toward the ceiling.

Emily frowned.

The ceiling?

Then she understood.

The attic.

The moment Victoria left for the courthouse to finalize paperwork, Emily slowly wheeled herself upstairs.

The attic hadn't been opened in years.

Dust covered every box.

Every piece of old furniture.

She searched frantically until she noticed a loose floorboard beneath an antique trunk.

Inside...

A small waterproof case.

Emily opened it.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Maria hadn't trusted only one copy.

Inside the case were three encrypted flash drives.

Printed photographs.

Laboratory reports.

Copies of intercepted emails.

Phone records.

And a handwritten note.

"Never keep the only copy of the truth."

Emily smiled for the first time in weeks.

Maria had been preparing for this long before anyone realized.

The next morning arrived.

Court day.

Victoria entered Emily's bedroom carrying the familiar paper medicine cup.

"This is important."

Emily looked at the pills.

"You want me calm."

"I want you healthy."

Emily took the cup.

Victoria watched carefully.

Emily swallowed every pill.

Or at least...

That's what Victoria believed.

The moment Victoria looked away, Emily discreetly spat them into a tissue hidden inside her sleeve.

She had practiced the movement dozens of times.

Victoria never noticed.

The courthouse buzzed with quiet conversations.

Attorneys hurried through the hallways.

Families waited anxiously outside courtrooms.

Victoria looked perfectly composed.

Elegant navy suit.

Pearl necklace.

Concerned expression.

To everyone else...

She looked like a loving mother trying to protect her injured daughter-in-law.

Emily remained in her wheelchair beside her.

Silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

Inside Courtroom Seven, Judge Eleanor Hayes reviewed the file.

"This hearing concerns the petition for temporary guardianship over Mrs. Emily Lawson."

Victoria lowered her eyes sadly.

"Yes, Your Honor."

The judge turned toward Emily.

"Mrs. Lawson..."

"Do you understand why you're here today?"

Emily looked at her calmly.

"Perfectly."

Victoria quickly interrupted.

"She has lucid moments."

The judge frowned slightly.

"I'll decide that."

Victoria immediately apologized.

"My apologies, Your Honor."

Emily noticed something.

The judge didn't like being interrupted.

Richard Benson presented the medical reports.

Dr. Collins testified first.

Emily watched him carefully.

He looked uncomfortable.

"Doctor..."

the judge asked.

"In your opinion, does Mrs. Lawson currently demonstrate cognitive impairment?"

The courtroom became silent.

Victoria folded her hands confidently.

Dr. Collins hesitated.

Longer than anyone expected.

Finally he answered.

"Based solely on the medical records provided to me..."

Victoria smiled.

"...I initially believed so."

Emily noticed the word.

Initially.

The doctor continued.

"However..."

Victoria's smile faded.

"I have serious concerns regarding the medications Mrs. Lawson has been receiving."

Richard immediately stood.

"Objection."

"On what grounds?"

"The witness is speculating."

Dr. Collins looked directly at the judge.

"I'm not speculating."

"I ordered independent laboratory analysis after our examination."

Emily blinked.

He had?

"The medications being administered were inconsistent with the prescriptions I approved."

The courtroom erupted into whispers.

Victoria's fingers tightened around her handbag.

Richard attempted to recover.

"Even so..."

"The patient's confusion—"

The courtroom doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man hurried inside.

Travel bag over one shoulder.

Suit wrinkled from a long international flight.

Ryan.

He looked exhausted.

But the moment he saw Emily...

Everything else disappeared.

"I'm sorry I'm late."

Victoria stood abruptly.

"Ryan!"

He didn't even look at her.

Instead...

He walked straight toward his wife.

"Emily."

"I'm here."

Emily felt tears forming.

"So am I."

Judge Hayes looked over her glasses.

"And you are?"

"Ryan Lawson."

"The petitioner's son."

Victoria smiled nervously.

"Your Honor, my son just arrived from Europe."

Ryan slowly turned toward the judge.

"I'd like permission to address the court."

Richard immediately objected.

"He's not scheduled to testify."

Ryan calmly removed a thick folder from his briefcase.

"I believe the court will want to see these."

Judge Hayes accepted the documents.

"What are they?"

"Communication records."

She flipped through several pages.

"Phone logs..."

"Email server reports..."

Ryan nodded.

"Someone intercepted every call and email between my wife and me for nearly a month."

The courtroom became silent again.

Judge Hayes slowly looked toward Victoria.

"Mrs. Lawson..."

"Can you explain this?"

Victoria's face remained expressionless.

"I have no idea what those documents are."

Ryan reached into his briefcase once more.

"Then perhaps these will help."

He placed a USB drive on the evidence table.

"Security footage."

Richard frowned.

"What footage?"

Ryan looked directly at his mother.

"The footage you never knew existed."

Victoria's confidence cracked for the first time.

Earlier that morning...

While flying home, Ryan had received an anonymous package delivered to his hotel.

No sender.

No return address.

Inside were the three encrypted flash drives Maria had hidden in the attic.

She had arranged everything before being thrown out of the mansion.

Ryan spent the entire flight watching every recording.

Every lie.

Every forged document.

Every conversation.

Every dose of medication.

By the time the plane landed...

He already knew the truth.

Judge Hayes ordered the courtroom screen activated.

The first video began playing.

Victoria.

Richard Benson.

The guardianship papers.

"We only need one signature."

Another clip.

Victoria replacing medication capsules.

Another.

Blocking Ryan's phone calls.

Another.

Redirecting Emily's emails.

Then the final recording.

Victoria's own voice echoed through the courtroom.

"Once she's declared incompetent..."

"...everything belongs to us."

Complete silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Richard slowly lowered his head.

Dr. Collins closed his eyes.

Even the court reporter stopped typing for a moment.

Victoria stared at the screen in disbelief.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's impossible."

Ryan looked at her.

"No, Mom."

His voice was calm.

"This..."

He gestured toward the screen.

"...is impossible."

Victoria suddenly stood.

"These videos are fake."

"No," Emily said quietly.

"They're not."

"You planted them."

Emily slowly rose from her wheelchair.

Without assistance.

Without hesitation.

Gasps filled the courtroom.

Victoria stepped backward.

"You..."

Emily took another step.

"You told everyone I couldn't even stand."

Another step.

"You drugged me."

Another.

"You isolated me."

Another.

"You tried to erase me."

Emily stopped directly in front of her.

"But you forgot one thing."

Victoria whispered...

"What?"

Emily looked her straight in the eyes.

"You picked the wrong lawyer to frame."

The courtroom doors opened once again.

This time, two detectives walked inside carrying arrest warrants.

Judge Hayes looked down at the file before her.

Then back at Victoria.

For the first time all morning...

May you like

The judge wasn't looking at a concerned mother.

She was looking at the prime suspect in a criminal conspiracy.
