Chapter 5 - Midnight Confrontation

Deputy Sheriff Miller—Doc’s brother and a long-time friend—walked up the driveway, holding a clipboard with the emergency court orders.
"Claire Henderson," Deputy Miller said formally. "You are being served with an emergency ex-parte order of protection and full temporary custody granted to Ethan Henderson. You are required to vacate these premises immediately."
"This is my house!" Claire shrieked, backing away from the officer. "Ethan, tell him! I own this house!"
"The mortgage is in my name, paid by my military pension and private consulting work," I replied calmly. "You signed a prenuptial agreement seven years ago, Claire. Section 4, Clause B: Infidelity and severe domestic neglect void all rights to spousal support and property division."
Julian, standing by his car with his hands on the hood under officer supervision, yelled out, "Claire, don't say anything! Call my lawyer!"
"Your lawyer is Arthur Vance," Deputy Miller called back to Julian with a smirk. "And Arthur just withdrew from representing you, son. In fact, he’s currently providing Mr. Henderson with full legal counsel."
Julian’s jaw dropped. The reality of his complete social and professional destruction hit him like a physical blow.
Claire turned back to me, her eyes wild, tears streaming through her melting makeup. "Ethan, please! You can't do this to me! Think about the kids! They need their mother!"
"They needed a mother this morning," I said, stepping down one stair. "They needed a mother when Mateo was crying from hunger. They needed a mother when Valerie was begging on her knees for her back to stop hurting. Where were you then, Claire?"
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" She threw herself forward, falling to her knees right on the concrete driveway, mimicking the exact posture my daughter had been forced into hours earlier. "I'll go to therapy! I'll do whatever you want! Just don't take my life away!"
"You took your own life away the moment you treated our children like slaves," I said coldly.
Deputy Miller stepped in, grabbing her arm gently but firmly. "Ma'am, you need to grab your bags and get into the back of the transport unit. If you step onto this property again before the hearing, you will be arrested for felony trespass and violation of a protective order."

As the deputies loaded Claire’s heavy duffel bags into the trunk of a transport vehicle, she screamed my name, her voice echoing off the quiet houses of our gated community. Neighbors began turning on their porch lights, peering through their blinds, watching the high-society queen of the neighborhood being hauled away in disgrace.
I turned my back on her, walked back inside, and locked the front door behind me.
