Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Deceit
Over the next forty-eight hours, the true scope of Claire’s betrayal began to unspool like a rotting ball of yarn.
Arthur Vance sat at my dining room table with a team of forensic accountants. We had full access to all household accounts, personal records, and digital communications, unlocked under the judge's discovery order.
What we found was staggering.
For the past two years, Claire had been systematically siphoning funds from our children's college trust accounts. She had opened three secret credit cards under my name, maxing them out on luxury clothes, hotel stays, and financial gifts to Julian Vance, whose real estate firm was secretly failing and on the verge of bankruptcy.
"She wasn't just neglectful, Ethan," Arthur said, shaking his head in disbelief as he pointed to a ledger. "She was preparing to abandon the family entirely. Look at these wire transfers. She was planning to move to a rental villa in Cabo next month with Julian. She was going to file for divorce while you were away on your next training deployment, claim sole custody to collect maximum child support, and put Valerie in an out-of-state boarding school."
I looked at the documents, my jaw set like concrete. "And Mateo?"
"She had already contacted a private adoption broker," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with genuine rage. "She was exploring 'private placement' under the guise that Mateo had special medical needs you couldn't afford."
I stood up from the table, walked to the window, and looked out into the backyard. Valerie was sitting on a soft blanket under the big oak tree, wearing a back brace, slowly tossing a tennis ball for Rex. Mateo was lying in a shaded playpen beside her, cooing happily as the cool afternoon breeze blew through his fine hair.
The anger inside me was gone, replaced by a cold, unwavering clarity.
"Arthur," I said softly.
"Yes, Ethan?"
"I don't just want a divorce. I want criminal charges. Child abuse, child endangerment, grand larceny, and identity theft."

"Consider it done," Arthur said. "The District Attorney’s office has already reviewed the camera footage from the kitchen. The DA is a mother of three. She’s personally handling the indictment."
