CHAPTER 3: Betrayal Inside the Family

CHAPTER 3: Betrayal Inside the Family

Charlotte's fingers hovered over the black flash drive.

The label, written in her mother's elegant handwriting, sent a chill through her.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS... SOMEONE HAS ALREADY BETRAYED US.

For several long seconds, no one in the boardroom spoke.

Arthur Whitmore broke the silence.

"Miss Vale, before we view what's on that drive, I believe you should read the letter."

Charlotte nodded.

She carefully picked up the cream-colored envelope marked FOR CHARLOTTE ONLY and broke the wax seal.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The ink had faded slightly, but every word carried the unmistakable warmth of Eleanor Vale.

My dearest Charlotte,

If this letter has reached you, then my greatest fear has come true. Someone close to our family has chosen greed over loyalty. I prayed I would have the chance to tell you everything myself, but if I cannot, you must promise me one thing—trust evidence, not appearances. The people who smile beside you may become your greatest enemies, while strangers may become your strongest allies.

The empire your grandfather built was never about money. It was built to protect people. If anyone tries to convince you otherwise, they do not deserve to lead it.

There is one person on the board who orchestrated everything, but that person never acts alone. Follow the signatures. Follow the money. And above all... trust Arthur.

I love you. Always.

—Mother

Charlotte wiped away a tear before anyone noticed.

Arthur quietly looked out the window, giving her a moment of privacy.

Samuel plugged the flash drive into the conference room computer.

The monitor flickered.

A video file automatically opened.

Eleanor Vale appeared on the screen.

She looked tired, but composed.

"If you're watching this," she began, "then I am no longer here."

Charlotte felt her chest tighten.

"This recording is being made seventy-two hours before I undergo surgery. My doctors believe I'll recover."

She paused.

"But someone has already tried to poison me once."

The room froze.

Arthur slowly removed his glasses.

"I knew she suspected something," he whispered.

"I never knew it had gone this far."

Eleanor continued.

"I have spent six months documenting financial irregularities within Solmere International."

Charts appeared beside her.

Offshore accounts.

False invoices.

Luxury property purchases.

Millions of dollars transferred through shell companies.

Each transaction ended at companies controlled by members of the board.

Samuel stared at the screen.

"They've been stealing from the company for years."

Charlotte clenched her fists.

"But who?"

Eleanor answered almost immediately.

"I cannot yet prove who ordered everything."

"But I know the conspiracy reaches beyond the executive offices."

"There is someone inside our own family helping them."

Charlotte's heart nearly stopped.

Family.

Arthur slowly lowered his head.

"I feared she would say that."

The recording ended with one final sentence.

"Charlotte... never attend a board meeting alone."

The screen went black.

Silence filled the room.

No one noticed the hidden camera inside the smoke detector transmitting every word to another location.

Miles away...

Inside a private office overlooking the city skyline...

A man leaned back in a leather chair.

Multiple surveillance screens displayed the boardroom from different angles.

He smiled.

"So she's found the archive."

Another man entered.

"What are your orders?"

The older man calmly sipped his coffee.

"Prepare the board."

"And Miss Ashcroft?"

"She's become a liability."

The assistant hesitated.

"Should we warn her?"

"No."

The man's smile widened.

"Sometimes the loudest pawn is the easiest one to sacrifice."

Back inside Solmere Resort...

Samuel suddenly noticed something unusual.

"The network activity."

Arthur looked over.

"What is it?"

"The archive room shouldn't be connected to the internet."

His fingers flew across the keyboard.

"But someone is remotely accessing this system."

Charlotte immediately understood.

"We're not alone."

Samuel nodded grimly.

"They're watching us."

Without hesitation, he disconnected every network cable from the conference table.

The monitor went dark.

"Too late," he muttered.

"They already saw everything."

Arthur looked toward Charlotte.

"Which means they'll act quickly."

A loud knock echoed outside the boardroom doors.

Everyone turned.

Three security officers stood outside.

Behind them was the resort's General Manager.

His face had turned pale.

"Miss Vale," he said nervously.

"The Board of Directors has arrived."

Charlotte frowned.

"They weren't scheduled."

"They called an emergency meeting."

Arthur gave a quiet sigh.

"They're moving faster than I expected."

Charlotte slipped her grandfather's platinum ring back into place.

"Good."

Arthur looked surprised.

She smiled for the first time that day.

"I've spent enough time hiding."

"Now it's their turn to answer questions."

Minutes later...

The Founders' Boardroom filled with executives.

Expensive suits.

Perfect smiles.

Cold eyes.

Charlotte recognized nearly every face from childhood.

Many had attended her birthday parties.

Many had hugged her after her mother's funeral.

Now none of them looked pleased to see her.

At the head of the table sat Richard Hawthorne.

Chairman of the Board.

Trusted family friend.

Or so everyone believed.

Richard folded his hands.

"Charlotte."

His voice sounded warm.

"We've all been worried about you."

Charlotte met his gaze.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"Because someone tried to kill me yesterday."

The room fell silent.

Not one director looked shocked.

Instead...

Several exchanged quick glances.

Arthur noticed.

So did Charlotte.

Richard recovered almost instantly.

"That's a serious accusation."

"So is attempted murder."

Charlotte placed the flash drive on the conference table.

"And unlike accusations..."

"I have evidence."

Richard's smile faded for the first time.

Arthur quietly opened another folder.

"I believe the shareholders would also be interested in these financial records."

Richard's fingers tightened around his pen.

Charlotte watched carefully.

It wasn't fear she saw.

It was calculation.

The man wasn't surprised by the evidence.

He had expected something.

Just not this soon.

Before anyone could continue...

The conference room doors burst open.

Vivian rushed inside, breathless.

"They're coming!"

Richard stood.

"Who?"

Vivian looked directly at him.

"The Financial Crimes Investigation Unit."

"They have search warrants."

Every color drained from Richard Hawthorne's face.

For the first time in years...

The man who had controlled Solmere Resort no longer looked like the one in charge.

He looked like a cornered man.

Charlotte slowly stood.

May you like

Then she asked the question that made every director freeze.

"Would anyone like to explain why my mother's signature appears on documents she supposedly signed... three weeks after she died?"
