CHAPTER 4: The Empire Fights Back

CHAPTER 4: The Empire Fights Back

The question hung over the boardroom like a thunderclap.

"Would anyone like to explain why my mother's signature appears on documents she supposedly signed... three weeks after she died?"

No one spoke.

Not Richard Hawthorne.

Not Vivian Ashcroft.

Not a single member of the Board of Directors.

Charlotte slowly placed the forged contracts on the polished walnut table.

Arthur Whitmore slid several certified reports beside them.

"The signatures have already been examined by an independent forensic document laboratory," he said calmly. "Every page was altered after Eleanor Vale's death. These are sophisticated forgeries."

A director named Leonard Briggs suddenly pushed back his chair.

"This is ridiculous."

Arthur met his eyes.

"Is it?"

Leonard swallowed.

"I had nothing to do with those documents."

Charlotte looked directly at him.

"Then why did your private company receive twelve million dollars from a Solmere subsidiary four days after my mother's funeral?"

Leonard's face turned white.

"You... you checked my accounts?"

"I checked the company's accounts."

Silence returned.

At that moment, the heavy boardroom doors swung open.

Several investigators wearing dark jackets entered alongside uniformed officers.

Leading them was Special Investigator Daniel Mercer.

He displayed an official warrant.

"Richard Hawthorne."

"You and every current board member are ordered to remain in this room while financial records are secured."

Richard forced a smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Daniel handed him the warrant.

"There isn't."

The room erupted.

Several directors protested.

Others demanded attorneys.

One quietly reached for his phone.

Samuel Brooks noticed immediately.

"He just deleted something."

The investigator confiscated the device.

"No more phones."

Arthur looked toward Charlotte.

"This is only the beginning."

Charlotte nodded.

She knew exposing fraud was easier than proving who had orchestrated it.

Richard remained unusually calm.

Too calm.

That troubled her.

While investigators searched filing cabinets and computers, Charlotte wandered toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the resort grounds.

Families laughed beside the lake.

Children chased one another across the gardens.

Employees greeted guests with practiced smiles.

Life continued outside.

Completely unaware that the empire beneath their feet was beginning to collapse.

Arthur approached quietly.

"You're thinking about your grandfather."

Charlotte smiled faintly.

"He built this place for families."

Arthur nodded.

"He used to say luxury wasn't marble."

"It was making strangers feel safe."

Charlotte looked back at the boardroom.

"Somewhere along the way, they forgot."

Before Arthur could answer, Samuel hurried across the room carrying a laptop.

"You need to see this."

He connected the computer to the conference display.

A hidden accounting program appeared.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

Then Samuel entered a password recovered from one of the directors' emails.

The screen changed.

Hundreds of secret transactions appeared.

Shell corporations.

Foreign bank accounts.

Luxury properties purchased through anonymous trusts.

Nearly one hundred million dollars had disappeared over the past six years.

Gasps filled the room.

Daniel Mercer looked stunned.

"This wasn't simple embezzlement."

Samuel nodded.

"This was organized."

Charlotte scanned the names attached to the transfers.

Most belonged to companies she had never heard of.

Then one name froze her in place.

Vale Legacy Holdings.

Her heartbeat quickened.

"That's impossible."

Arthur leaned closer.

"It shouldn't exist."

"It was dissolved after your grandfather passed away."

Charlotte opened the file.

The listed owner wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Vivian.

It wasn't any board member.

The owner was identified only by two initials.

C. V.

Charlotte frowned.

"My initials."

Richard smiled for the first time in nearly an hour.

"There."

He folded his hands calmly.

"You wanted answers."

"Now explain why stolen money was transferred into an account carrying your initials."

The room exploded with whispers.

Even Daniel looked uncertain.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"I've never seen this account."

Richard shrugged.

"Perhaps someone has been using your identity."

Arthur immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Richard raised an eyebrow.

Arthur held up another folder.

"Eleanor anticipated identity fraud."

He removed sealed notarized documents.

"Every financial account belonging to Charlotte Vale requires dual biometric authorization."

Samuel checked the account records.

His eyes widened.

"They bypassed biometric security."

"How?"

Samuel typed rapidly.

Then stopped.

"There was an administrator override."

Arthur already knew the answer.

"Only one person possessed that level of access."

Every eye turned toward Richard Hawthorne.

For the first time, genuine concern crossed his face.

Daniel Mercer spoke firmly.

"Mr. Hawthorne..."

"I'll need you to remain seated."

Richard slowly stood instead.

"I think not."

Everything happened at once.

The lights went out.

The boardroom plunged into darkness.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered somewhere down the hallway.

Emergency alarms began echoing throughout the executive floor.

Red emergency lights flickered on.

Samuel cursed.

"The power grid's been sabotaged."

Daniel reached for his flashlight.

"No one moves."

But someone already had.

Charlotte heard hurried footsteps disappearing through the darkness.

Richard.

She knew that sound.

"He's escaping!"

Security officers rushed toward the doors.

By the time emergency power restored the lights twenty seconds later...

Richard Hawthorne was gone.

Only his overturned chair remained.

Daniel slammed his fist against the table.

"He planned this."

Samuel checked the surveillance network.

"No."

His expression darkened.

"It gets worse."

"What?"

"Someone erased every camera on the executive floor."

Charlotte closed her eyes briefly.

Richard hadn't simply fled.

He had prepared an escape long before today.

Arthur picked up a small object from beneath Richard's chair.

"What is this?"

It was a brass key.

Old.

Worn.

Engraved with a single word.

LIGHTHOUSE.

Charlotte stared at it.

Her grandfather had once owned a private lighthouse overlooking the cliffs beyond the resort.

No one had used it in years.

Samuel looked at the old maps stored in the archive.

"The lighthouse connects to maintenance tunnels."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Then that's where he's going."

Charlotte slipped the key into her pocket.

"I'm ending this."

Daniel looked at her.

"It could be dangerous."

Charlotte met his gaze without hesitation.

"My family spent three generations building this company."

"I'm not letting one man steal its future."

Outside, storm clouds rolled across the coastline.

Lightning illuminated the abandoned lighthouse standing alone on the cliffs.

Inside its weathered walls...

Richard Hawthorne unlocked an old steel safe hidden beneath the staircase.

He removed a thick envelope.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

A satellite phone.

And one final document.

A signed contract naming the true architect of the conspiracy.

Richard looked toward the stormy sea.

May you like

"They're coming," he whispered.

"But they'll never see the name... unless they catch me first."
