Chapter 22 - Helen Comes Home

Helen never returned to Robert’s old house.

It no longer existed for us.

But six years after the party, she returned to him.

Not because he demanded it.

Not because family pressured her.

Because she chose.

They moved into a small house near a lake.

Two bedrooms.

One office.

A garden Robert maintained badly.

Helen chose all the furniture.

No orange sofa.

She said she no longer needed rebellion in upholstery form.

Their marriage looked different.

Separate bank accounts.

Shared household account.

Therapy every other month.

Arguments without threats of abandonment.

Helen learned to say no.

Robert learned that no was a complete sentence.

At their small recommitment ceremony, there were only fourteen people.

No giant cake.

Jacob protested.

“There should always be cake.”

So Claire bought one.

Robert stayed six feet away from it.

At dinner, Helen gave a toast.

“For most of my life, I believed love meant staying.”

She looked at Robert.

“Then I learned sometimes love means leaving long enough for both people to decide whether they can return differently.”

Robert took her hand.

I looked at my children.

Rebecca was seventeen.

Samuel fourteen.

Jacob ten.

They had all chosen to attend.

That mattered more than any ceremony.

Afterward, Helen hugged me.

“You saved me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“You did.”

“Mom, you left.”

She stared.

“You opened the account. You found the lawyer. You moved.”

I smiled.

“You saved yourself.”

She hugged me again.

May you like

This time, she accepted the correction.
