THE CHILDREN THEY MADE SERVE / Chapter 23 / 25

Chapter 23 - Rebecca Leaves

The first child to leave home was Rebecca.

College.

Boston.

Music and public policy.

I pretended to be prepared.

I was not.

Her room filled with boxes.

Claire helped organize.

Samuel stole her charger repeatedly.

Jacob asked whether Boston allowed brothers to visit.

Robert arrived the night before she left.

He carried one envelope.

“No gift,” Rebecca warned.

“Technically paper.”

She opened it.

Inside was a copy of Margaret’s letter about family and safety.

The original remained with me.

Robert had written something beneath it.

I spent too many years believing a family name mattered more than the people carrying it. You taught me otherwise. Thank you.

Rebecca read it quietly.

Then hugged him.

A real hug.

Long.

Robert closed his eyes.

I looked away.

Some moments belonged to the people who earned them.

At the airport, Rebecca hugged everyone.

When she reached me, she whispered:

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“You came back.”

I knew immediately what she meant.

The garden.

Forty-three minutes.

Eight years earlier.

“I always will.”

She smiled.

“No.”

She stepped back.

“You taught me I can come back for myself too.”

Then she walked toward security.

I stood there crying.

Samuel sighed.

“Dad leaking.”

Jacob nodded.

“Chronic condition.”

Claire held my hand.

We watched Rebecca disappear into the crowd.

My daughter.

Chosen.

Real.

May you like

Free.
