Chapter 8 - THE BANQUET TRAPThe hotel corridor became a river of bodies.

Guests ran beneath the sprinklers, slipping on the wet marble and pushing toward the emergency exits. Lorraine dragged Ethan backward while using him as a shield.

Naomi could not fire without risking his life.

Rachel held the sealed trust beneath her coat.

Lorraine saw the shape of the document tube.

“Put it on the floor.”

Ethan’s face twisted as the knife pressed against his skin.

“Rachel, keep it.”

Lorraine struck the back of his knee. He fell, but she kept him upright by his collar.

“Your loyalty arrived too late,” she said.

A rolling banquet cart broke loose in the crowd and sped down the sloped corridor.

Rachel stepped aside.

The cart struck Lorraine’s hip.

Her knife hand moved away from Ethan’s throat.

Naomi charged.

Lorraine slashed toward her, cutting through the sleeve of Naomi’s jacket. Naomi caught Lorraine’s wrist and drove her against the wall.

Ethan crawled away.

Lorraine twisted free and ran into the ballroom.

Rachel followed before Naomi could stop her.

The room was nearly empty. Tables had overturned. Broken glasses glittered beneath the emergency lights. A giant projection screen displayed the Blackwater auction countdown.

Four minutes remained.

Lorraine climbed onto the stage and crossed toward the service stairs.

Rachel moved between tables, keeping one hand against her stomach.

“Lorraine!”

The older woman stopped.

“You blamed my father for what Mercer did to you.”

Lorraine turned slowly.

“My family owned half the Blackwater riverfront. Your father took it.”

“Mercer took it. My father discovered the fraud.”

“Your father became rich.”

“He placed the money in a trust to return the land to the families Mercer cheated.”

Lorraine’s face faltered.

Rachel pulled a copy of the ledger from her coat.

“Your parents’ names are here. They were supposed to receive twelve percent of the recovered property.”

Lorraine stared at the page.

“He told me your father destroyed the records.”

“He needed you angry. Angry people don’t ask who profits.”

For a second, Lorraine appeared older than sixty-three. Her shoulders dropped. The knife lowered.

Then applause came from the balcony.

Grant Mercer stepped into view.

He wore a black tuxedo and held a pistol.

“Beautiful speech,” he said.

Naomi entered the ballroom behind Rachel.

Mercer aimed at her.

“Drop the weapon, Detective.”

Naomi placed her gun on the floor.

Mercer descended the balcony stairs.

Lorraine looked from him to the ledger.

“You lied to me.”

“I gave you a purpose.”

“You used my son.”

“Your son volunteered.”

Ethan stood in the doorway, supported by Mia.

“I volunteered for money,” he said. “You promised my mother the land.”

Mercer smiled.

“And all of you believed exactly what you needed to believe.”

The auction countdown reached two minutes.

Mercer pointed the pistol toward Rachel.

“The trust.”

She held the document tube against her chest.

“If you shoot me, you can’t activate it.”

“I don’t need to activate it. I need it destroyed before the auction closes.”

A side door opened behind him.

Victor entered with two federal agents.

“Then you should have killed me when you had the chance,” he said.

Mercer spun and fired.

Victor dropped behind a table. The shot shattered a chandelier support.

The chandelier swung downward.

Guests still trapped near the far exit screamed as crystal and metal descended above them.

Rachel grabbed the edge of a banquet table and shoved it beneath the falling frame. The chandelier crashed onto the table instead of the people, scattering glass across the carpet.

Naomi dove for her weapon.

Mercer fired at her, forcing her behind the stage.

Federal agents returned fire.

Lorraine ran toward Mercer.

He struck her with the pistol and pushed her from the stage.

Ethan caught his mother before she hit the floor. Both fell against a row of chairs.

Mercer seized Rachel by the coat and pulled her onto the stage.

The trust tube rolled away.

He aimed his weapon at her stomach.

“Pick it up.”

Rachel slowly bent toward the tube.

The auction clock reached one minute.

On the stage floor, Rachel noticed the control pedal for the heavy theater curtain.

She stepped on it.

The curtain dropped between Mercer and the armed officers.

Rachel grabbed the document tube and ran behind the screen.

Mercer followed.

They entered the narrow backstage loading area. Props, electrical cables, and stacked chairs blocked the route.

He caught Rachel near the freight elevator.

She swung the metal tube against his wrist.

The pistol fell through the gap beside the elevator platform.

Mercer struck her shoulder and drove her against the wall.

Rachel fought to remain standing.

He reached for the tube.

She pulled a fire hose from its cabinet and opened the valve.

Water exploded from the nozzle, striking Mercer in the chest and knocking him into a stack of folding tables.

Rachel ran back toward the ballroom.

Mercer recovered and seized the hose. He pulled.

Rachel lost her balance and fell to one knee.

The auction clock reached ten seconds.

Naomi cut through the curtain with Lorraine’s knife and entered the backstage area.

Mercer wrapped the hose around Rachel’s arm and dragged her toward him.

Ethan appeared behind Mercer.

He tackled the attorney.

Both men crashed into the freight elevator gate.

Mercer punched Ethan repeatedly, then reached for a steel stage hook.

Ethan held him long enough for Naomi to aim.

“Drop it!”

The auction clock reached zero.

A confirmation tone sounded.

The Blackwater properties had been sold.

Mercer smiled despite the gun pointed at him.

“You’re too late.”

Rachel looked at the projection screen.

The winning buyer was Blackwater Renewal Trust.

Mia held up Naomi’s tablet.

“I submitted Rachel’s documents while you were fighting.”

The auction system had recognized the original trust’s priority claim and transferred the properties into the restitution fund created by Rachel’s father.

Mercer’s smile disappeared.

Federal officers surrounded him.

Lorraine sat on the floor, holding the ledger page that listed her parents’ stolen land.

“I destroyed my family for a lie,” she whispered.

Mercer was placed in handcuffs.

As officers led him away, he leaned toward Rachel.

“You think the land was the prize?”

Rachel watched him carefully.

“What was?”

Mercer’s eyes dropped toward her stomach.

“The heir.”

Before he could say more, a federal agent pulled him through the door.

Rachel felt another contraction.

This one did not fade.

Water spread across the ballroom floor beneath her dress.

Mia’s eyes widened.

“The baby is coming.”

At that moment, every light in the hotel went out.

From the service corridor came the sound of handcuffs striking the floor.

When emergency lighting returned, the federal agents were unconscious.

Grant Mercer was gone.
