Chapters 4 & 5 — The Truth Worth Living For

Two nights later, the nursery exploded with alarms.

One guard collapsed.

Another reached for his weapon.

Marco stepped into the room with six armed men.

"Give me the child."

Dominic stood between the crib and the doorway.

"Over my dead body."

Marco laughed.

"Exactly."

Before anyone fired, Sophie noticed something no one else did.

Nico wasn't crying.

He was struggling to breathe.

His tiny face had turned pale.

Years ago, she had watched her own son suffer the same terrifying symptoms.

"Move!" she shouted.

Everyone froze.

She ignored the guns and rushed to the crib.

Nico's airway was blocked.

Within seconds, she carefully cleared it and performed infant first aid.

The baby gasped.

Then cried.

The sound echoed through the mansion like a second chance.

Dominic turned back toward Marco.

"You endangered my son."

Marco smiled coldly.

"He was never your future."

"He was mine."

The confession changed everything.

Several bodyguards slowly lowered their weapons.

Not toward Dominic.

Toward Marco.

They had remained loyal to Dominic all along.

They had simply been waiting for proof.

Minutes later, police sirens surrounded the estate.

Marco and his men were arrested before sunrise.

Months passed.

The Moretti empire disappeared piece by piece as Dominic cooperated with federal investigators, trading the criminal life for protection and a legitimate future for his son.

The mansion was sold.

The armed guards were gone.

The silence disappeared.

One bright spring afternoon, Sophie stood in a small city park watching Nico take his first wobbly steps across the grass.

He laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind that echoed through the trees instead of marble hallways.

Dominic knelt beside him, no expensive suit, no bodyguards, no fear.

Just a father reaching out his hands.

Nico stumbled forward and fell into his arms.

"You caught him," Sophie said with a smile.

Dominic looked at her.

"No."

His voice was warm.

"You caught both of us."

She felt tears rise, but this time they weren't born from grief.

They came from healing.

Leo would always live in her heart.

Nothing could change that.

But because she had dared to cross one line no one else would, another little boy had been given the chance to grow up with the father who finally learned that love was stronger than fear.

Sometimes the bravest person in the room isn't the one carrying a gun.
