Chapter 5

Arthur spent the night pacing the study, the walls lined with law books that suddenly felt like useless paper. He needed an exit strategy, but every path led back to the realization that he knew nothing about the world outside his own front door. He had checked his bank accounts, his digital footprints, and his professional records. Everything was in order, yet everything felt fake. There were no strange charges, no hidden communications, just the monotonous, empty reality of a man who worked, slept, and parented in a vacuum. He realized now that his life had been a meticulously maintained simulation. Even the way he met his wife—that serendipitous, whirlwind romance—now looked like a calculated trap. He went to the kitchen at dawn, finding the hockey stick still exactly where he had left it. It was a mundane object, yet it felt like a cursed relic. He picked it up, feeling its weight, wondering what secrets it had been used to enforce. He heard a soft rustle and saw Lily standing in the doorway, clutching a stuffed bear. She looked so small, so fragile. She didn't look like a pawn; she looked like a child who had lost her world. He knelt down, setting the stick aside, his heart aching with a sudden, overwhelming sense of responsibility. "Lily," he whispered, his voice thick. She walked toward him, her movements hesitant. When she reached him, she didn't embrace him; she just stood there, her eyes searching his face. "Are you going to leave too?" she asked, her voice small. The question stung more than any accusation. "No," he vowed, his resolve hardening. "I am not leaving. We are going to find out what is happening, and then we are going to go somewhere else. Somewhere real." He knew he was making a promise he might not be able to keep, but it was the only thing he had left to offer. He felt the weight of the situation shifting. For years, he had been the passive observer, the man in the suit. Now, he was the father, and if it meant tearing down the walls of this existence to keep her safe, he would do it. He stood up, taking her hand, and together they walked toward the living room to find Clara.
