Chapter 8

The confrontation erupted at dinner. Arthur sat at the head of the table, his eyes fixed on Clara, who was carving a roast with rhythmic, precise movements. Lily sat between them, her gaze vacant, as if she were waiting for a cue. The tension in the room was palpable, a physical pressure that made it hard to breathe. Arthur pushed his plate away, the clatter echoing in the dining room. "I’m taking her tomorrow," he declared, his voice steady. "No arguments. No explanations. We are leaving." Clara didn't even flinch. She placed the knife down and looked at him, her expression one of mild amusement. "You think you can just walk out? Arthur, you don't even have a passport, let alone a destination. Everything you own, everything you believe in, is connected to the network. You are a node in a system. Disconnect, and you simply cease to exist." Her words were a chilling reality check. He had checked his accounts, his ID, his credentials—everything was tied to the corporate identity he had been given. If he left, he would have no way to support himself, no way to live. But the alternative was unacceptable. "Then I will start over," he said, standing up. "I will be nobody. It doesn't matter, as long as she is free." He grabbed Lily’s hand, pulling her toward the door. Suddenly, the lights flickered and died. The house went black, the only sound the muffled, rhythmic breathing of someone else in the room. Clara’s voice floated through the darkness, calm and detached. "You are trying to act like a hero, Arthur. But you are just a character in a tragedy. Don't you see? The tragedy isn't that you are a puppet. It’s that you are beginning to believe you are the puppeteer." Arthur stumbled toward the door, his hand fumbling for the handle. He felt a hand on his shoulder—a firm, cold grip. He spun around, swinging, but his fist met only empty air. He realized then that it wasn't just Clara; the house itself was turning against him. He pulled Lily closer, his heart racing. He had to get out, even if it meant walking into the void.
