Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the BankAt 2:00 PM, the towering glass facade of the Commerce National Bank in downtown Dallas reflected the bright afternoon sun. Valerie walked through the revolving doors wearing dark sunglasses, a beige trench coat, and carrying a leather briefcase. Beside her walked Marcus—a slick, sharp-featured man in his late thirties with greedy eyes and an arrogant demeanor.

"Are you sure he's going to sign?" Marcus whispered as they crossed the marble lobby toward a private conference room. "If this is a setup, Valerie, we're facing federal time."

"He's a broken man, Marcus," Valerie replied coldly, adjusting her gloves. "I saw him at the hospital. He’s terrified of losing the kid to the state. He'd sign his own death warrant if he thought it would keep Sophie in his arms. Besides, he doesn't know about the toxicology reports yet. He thinks we just gave her cold medicine."

They entered the glass-walled conference room on the third floor. Sitting at the long mahogany table was Alejandro. He looked exhausted, his hair unkempt, his eyes rimmed with red. On the table before him sat a thick stack of legal documents.

"Valerie," Alejandro said, his voice flat and defeated as he looked up.

"Alejandro," Valerie said, taking a seat opposite him while Marcus stood behind her like a guard. "I'm glad you came to your senses. It didn't have to be this way, you know. If you had just let me handle the family finances from the beginning, Sophie wouldn't be in that hospital bed."

"You poisoned her," Alejandro said quietly, staring directly into her eyes.

Valerie gave a small, condescending laugh. "Don't be dramatic. A little illness builds character. And it gave us the legal leverage we needed to fix your sister's messy estate."

Marcus pulled a fountain pen from his suit pocket and slid it across the table toward Alejandro. "Sign the trust management transfer on page twelve and sixteen, Mr. Rivers. Once the bank verifies your signature, we withdraw the custody petition, and you can go back to playing happy father."

Alejandro picked up the pen, his hand trembling slightly. He turned to page twelve.

"Is five million dollars really worth destroying a child's life?" Alejandro asked softly, his finger resting on the signature line.

"Five million dollars changes lives, Alejandro," Valerie sneered, leaning forward, her mask completely gone. "Your sister was weak. You are weak. You sat on that money doing nothing while I worked like a dog for your pathetic company. I earned every cent of this trust."

"You didn't earn a damn thing," Alejandro said.

He slammed the pen down onto the table. He didn't sign.

Valerie’s eyes flared with anger. "What are you doing? Sign the paper!"

"I don't think he needs to," a calm voice echoed from the doorway.

The conference room door swung open, and Detective Miller walked in, flanked by four plainclothes officers and two federal agents. Behind them stood Elena, holding her phone up, recording every second of the encounter.

Marcus immediately tried to bolt for the side emergency exit, but two federal agents grabbed his arms, slamming him against the glass wall and snapping handcuffs around his wrists.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Valerie shrieked, jumping out of her chair. "This is a private legal meeting! Alejandro, tell them to leave!"

"Valerie Sterling, also known as Valerie Rivers," Detective Miller announced loudly, pulling a thick warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder of a minor, criminal conspiracy, solicitation of poison, and federal wire fraud."

Valerie’s face turned ghastly pale. "Poison? You... you have no proof!"

"We have the amber bottles from your office," Elena spoke up, her voice ringing with absolute triumph. "We have the toxicology reports showing antifreeze in the milk. We have the micro-pins from Sophie's pillowcase. And we have your tablet, where you so foolishly logged every search and message with your partner here."

Valerie looked at Alejandro, her eyes wide with frantic, terrified realization. "Alejandro... please! It was Marcus! He forced me to do it! He came up with the plan! I love you, darling, you know I love you!"

Alejandro stood up from his chair, towering over her. He looked down at the woman who had brought so much darkness into his life, feeling no anger anymore—only an absolute, cleansing disgust.

"You never loved anyone, Valerie," Alejandro said coldly as the officers grabbed her arms and pulled her hands behind her back. "Enjoy your new room. It won't have a soft pillow."

As the steel handcuffs clicked shut around Valerie’s wrists, she began to scream and thrash, her arrogant composure completely shattering as she was dragged out through the marble bank lobby in front of dozens of staring patrons.
