Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the SanctuarySix months after the trial, the Rivers home underwent a complete transformation.

Alejandro had hired a team of contractors to completely renovate the second floor of the house. Every piece of furniture, every rug, and every curtain associated with Valerie’s time there was removed and discarded.
Sophie’s room was repainted in bright, cheerful shades of sky blue and lavender. A custom wooden bookshelf filled with her favorite fairy tales lined one wall, and a large bay window let in warm, golden sunlight all afternoon.
Sophie’s health had recovered remarkably. Under the care of proper nutrition, physical therapy, and the unconditional love of her father and grandmother, her lungs were clear, her skin was radiant, and her spirit had returned brighter than ever before.
One Saturday afternoon, Alejandro walked into the backyard to find Sophie and Elena planting a bed of yellow sunflowers near the garden fence. Sophie was wearing small garden gloves, her face smudged with dark soil, laughing happily as she chased a butterfly across the green grass.
"Look, Dad!" Sophie called out, running over to grab his hand. "Grandma said these sunflowers are going to grow taller than the fence by summertime!"
"Is that so?" Alejandro laughed, picking her up and swinging her around until she squealed with delight. "Then we're going to need a bigger ladder to water them!"
Elena walked over, wiping her hands on her apron, watching the two of them with a soft, tearful smile. "She sleeps through the night now, Alejandro," Elena noted quietly as Sophie ran off to play with the garden hose. "No nightmares. No flinching."
"It’s because she knows she’s home, Ma," Alejandro said, his arm wrapping around his mother's shoulders. "And she knows nobody can ever hurt her again."
That evening, Alejandro sat at his desk in his study. He pulled out a small wooden box from his drawer. Inside was the worn pink blanket Marissa had left behind, now freshly cleaned and neatly folded, alongside a framed photograph of his sister smiling at a beach two years ago.

He placed the photograph on his desk beside a new photo—one taken last week of him, Sophie, and Elena sitting together on the front porch, laughing under the bright Texas sun.
"We made it, Marissa," Alejandro whispered to the photograph, feeling a profound, comforting peace settle over his heart. "She’s safe. I promised you I’d protect her, and I always will."
