Chapter 6 - THE FIRST CRACK IN THE WALL

Evelyn explained that the nurse in the video had never worked for her.

The woman was a private actor hired through a crisis-management firm connected to Grant. Evelyn recognized her because Veronica had introduced her weeks earlier as a documentary producer collecting family history.

The kitchen footage contained a simpler deception. Evelyn was carrying a silver letter opener, not a knife. The camera angle hid its decorative handle, and the sound had been removed so viewers could not hear her calling for June after finding the back door open.

Caleb asked why she had remained silent after the court approved guardianship.

“Because they told me you had been captured,” Evelyn said. “Grant showed me a military notice and said any public fight over the company would interfere with negotiations for your release.”

Caleb felt the betrayal settle deeper. Veronica had used his deployment against both of them, giving each a different lie designed to prevent contact.

June agreed to meet them at the hospital chapel. She brought a copy of the original house-camera index, hidden inside a church cookbook. The files played at the board meeting had been exported from Grant’s laptop three days before the events they supposedly recorded.

“There is another camera,” June said. “Mr. Morgan installed it after the first break-in years ago. Veronica never found the storage unit.”

The hidden recorder was inside the estate’s old greenhouse pump room.

Caleb, Owen, and a court-appointed investigator entered Morgan House under a preservation order. The recorder contained footage of Veronica directing workers to place a chair, medical tray, and call button inside the concrete room after Caleb had already removed Evelyn. It also showed Grant deleting hallway files and instructing the false nurse where to stand.

Then the footage revealed Owen entering the room alone weeks earlier.

Caleb stopped the video.

Owen admitted he had seen Evelyn behind the steel door. Veronica told him she was temporarily isolated after attacking staff. Evelyn begged him to call Caleb, but Grant showed Owen documents claiming Caleb was under investigation and unable to receive family contact.

“You still walked away,” Caleb said.

“I was afraid the sale would collapse.”

“That explains it. It does not erase it.”

Owen accepted the words without defending himself.

The investigator began copying the recorder. Before the upload completed, the greenhouse power failed. Smoke poured from the pump housing. Someone had remotely overloaded the old wiring.

They carried the recorder outside, but its internal drive had overheated. Only thirty-eight minutes of footage survived.

The clip proved the room was staged and the video evidence manipulated. It did not show who ordered Evelyn confined or where the financial records had gone.

Grant responded by reporting June for theft of private data. Police arrived at her apartment and found company documents in a locked suitcase she had never seen.

She was arrested before witness protection could move her.

At the same time, the hospital informed Caleb that Evelyn’s medical chart had been accessed remotely. A discharge order transferred her to a Morgan-owned psychiatric facility.

The signature authorizing the move belonged to Caleb.

His cloned identity was still active, and someone was using it faster than he could expose it.
