Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER VINCENT ERASEDGabriel sent a video to Vincent’s attorney.

The recording showed twelve children seated inside an abandoned schoolroom. They appeared frightened but unharmed. Their faces matched names from Celeste’s protected witness list.

Gabriel had already found them.

He demanded the original archive, full access to Audrey’s trust, and the release of every Moretti account frozen by federal investigators.

If his demands were not met within twenty-four hours, he would reveal the children’s identities to the enemies of their families.

Vincent watched the video from the detention center.

“You cannot negotiate with him,” Naomi said.

“I was not planning to.”

“You are in federal custody.”

“Then release me.”

“That will not happen.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You have spent years trying to dismantle my network. Gabriel is about to inherit it because every frightened commander believes I am finished.”

“Help us identify them.”

“They will not speak to federal agents.”

“They will speak to you?”

“They will obey me once.”

Naomi understood his plan.

Vincent wanted to publicly dissolve his own organization and order every commander to cooperate against Gabriel.

Doing so would remove the power he had spent decades building.

It would also make him vulnerable to every enemy waiting for revenge.

Naomi took the proposal to the prosecutor.

Two hours later, Vincent was released under armed supervision.

He entered a secure broadcast room and opened the same private channel he had used outside the Thorne estate.

Hundreds of hidden commanders connected.

Vincent appeared on every screen.

“For thirty-one years,” he said, “you served the authority attached to my name. That authority ends tonight.”

Murmurs spread across the channel.

Vincent continued.

“All accounts, routes, records, and personnel are to be surrendered to Agent Naomi Price. Anyone who refuses will be treated as Gabriel Moretti’s ally.”

A commander in Marseille spoke first.

“You are asking us to destroy ourselves.”

“I am ordering you to prevent something worse.”

“What happens to us?”

“You answer for what you have done.”

“And you?”

Vincent looked directly into the camera.

“So will I.”

One by one, commanders disconnected.

Naomi feared they had rejected him.

Then data began flooding federal servers.

Account numbers.

Safe houses.

Routes.

Names.

Evidence.

Vincent’s empire was collapsing by his own command.

At the safehouse, Audrey watched the broadcast.

She saw her father lose everything without hesitation.

For the first time, she understood the difference between protection and possession.

He was not demanding that she return to him.

He was not asking her forgiveness.

He was choosing her future over his power.

Celeste watched from the doorway.

“He never would have done that before,” she said.

Audrey did not look at her.

“Maybe neither of you knew him as well as you thought.”

Eleanor entered carrying a laptop.

Investigators had recovered part of Richard’s ledger from a remote backup. One name appeared repeatedly beside payments to Gabriel.

Julian Thorne.

Not merely in recent years.

The payments began before Julian met Audrey.

Julian had been Gabriel’s student.

His courtship, marriage, and imprisonment of Audrey were planned from the beginning.

Audrey felt sick.

Every kind word Julian had ever spoken became another weapon.

Then she saw a second name.

Eleanor Thorne.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

“I never received this money.”

The payments were routed to an account opened using her identity.

Julian had been preparing to frame his mother for the entire conspiracy.

Celeste leaned closer.

“There is another pattern.”

Each payment date corresponded to a Moretti family event: Audrey’s graduation, her engagement, her wedding, Vincent’s retirement announcement.

Gabriel had followed them for years.

“He wanted Vincent to feel safe before taking everything,” Celeste said.

Audrey looked at the final payment.

It had been made that morning.

The receiving account belonged to a luxury hotel hosting the Thorne Foundation’s annual charity gala that evening.

Naomi contacted the hotel.

The gala had not been canceled.

Hundreds of politicians, bankers, and donors were already arriving.

Julian planned to appear publicly.

It was either arrogance or a trap.

Audrey insisted on going.

Vincent refused when he learned.

“You can barely stand.”

“Julian built his power by telling everyone I was unstable. If I remain hidden, he controls the story.”

“He may kill you.”

“He already tried to erase me.”

Vincent looked toward Naomi.

“She is a federal witness.”

“She is also an adult,” Naomi replied.

The words struck him.

Vincent turned back to Audrey.

“What do you need from me?”

“Stand beside me.”

Not in front of her.

Not behind her.

Beside her.

Vincent nodded.

That evening, the hotel ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Guests whispered about the collapse of the Thorne banking empire, but the gala continued because Julian’s office had assured everyone the rumors were false.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Audrey entered wearing a simple black dress that concealed most of her bandages. She leaned on a cane, with Vincent walking beside her.

The room fell silent.

Julian stood on the stage.

His smile froze.

Richard was nowhere in sight.

Neither was Gabriel.

Audrey walked through the crowd while cameras turned toward her.

Julian recovered quickly.

“My wife has been unwell,” he announced. “Please do not encourage this performance.”

Audrey reached the stage.

He lowered his voice.

“You should have signed.”

She took the microphone.

“For eight months, Julian Thorne locked me beneath his family’s estate.”

Gasps spread through the ballroom.

Julian laughed.

“She is confused.”

Audrey pressed a button.

Eleanor’s recordings played through the speakers.

Julian’s voice filled the room, ordering doctors to falsify reports and threatening Audrey when she refused to transfer her inheritance.

Guests began moving toward the exits.

Federal agents locked the doors.

Julian’s smile disappeared.

Then the ballroom screens changed.

A live image appeared.

Richard Thorne was tied to a chair inside an unknown room.

Gabriel stood behind him.

“Good evening,” Gabriel said.

Vincent stepped toward the screen.

“Let the children go.”

Gabriel smiled.

“You dissolved an empire for one daughter. Touching.”

He placed a hand on Richard’s shoulder.

“But Audrey has not told you what she did before escaping.”

Vincent looked at her.

Audrey’s face turned pale.

Julian began laughing again.

“She remembers.”

Gabriel played another recording.

It showed Audrey inside the estate cellar, standing over a motionless man with blood on her hands.

Gabriel looked into the camera.

“Your innocent daughter killed the only witness who could have destroyed us.”

The ballroom erupted.

Vincent turned toward Audrey.

May you like

She whispered, “That is not what happened.”

Before she could explain, the supposedly dead man in the recording walked onto the ballroom stage.
