Chapter 8 - THE WITNESS AUDREY WAS ACCUSED OF KILLINGThe man’s name was Daniel Rusk.

He had served as the Thorne estate’s financial controller for fourteen years. According to the official report, he disappeared six months earlier after stealing company funds.

According to Gabriel’s recording, Audrey killed him in the cellar.

Yet Daniel now stood beneath the ballroom lights.

Alive.

Terrified.

Julian stared at him.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

Daniel looked toward the federal agents surrounding the room.

“That was your plan.”

He explained that he had discovered Julian’s payments to Gabriel. When he threatened to expose them, Julian imprisoned him in the cellar near Audrey.

The recording showed Audrey kneeling beside Daniel after Julian’s men beat him unconscious. The blood on her hands belonged to Daniel, but she had been trying to stop the bleeding.

Audrey had helped him escape through a service tunnel.

Daniel was the person who sent Vincent the six-second distress recording.

“You left me there,” Audrey said.

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“I promised I would bring help.”

“You waited six months.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

The simple answer silenced him.

Naomi escorted Daniel away to give a full statement.

Gabriel’s image remained on the screens.

His attempt to discredit Audrey had failed, but he appeared amused rather than angry.

“Well done,” he said. “You found one witness.”

Audrey faced the camera.

“We found all twelve children.”

Gabriel’s smile faded.

During the gala confrontation, information surrendered by Vincent’s commanders had led federal teams to the abandoned school.

The children were safe.

Gabriel looked toward someone beyond the camera.

Then the feed disappeared.

Julian tried to run.

Vincent blocked the stage stairs.

Julian swung at him, but Audrey struck the floor once with her cane.

“Do not touch him.”

Vincent stopped.

Audrey looked at the man who had imprisoned her.

“You told me no one would believe me.”

Julian’s eyes moved across the ballroom.

Every guest was watching.

Every camera was recording.

Every ally had stepped away.

“You needed my name,” Audrey continued. “My inheritance. My silence. And when I refused, you tried to make me disappear.”

Julian sneered.

“You think public sympathy makes you powerful?”

“No.”

Audrey handed Naomi the final trust authorization.

“Truth does.”

The authorization allowed federal investigators to access Celeste’s protected archive before Audrey’s thirtieth birthday.

Julian lunged for the paper.

Agents restrained him.

For the first time, genuine panic overtook his arrogance.

“You cannot open that archive!”

“Why?” Audrey asked. “What else is inside?”

Julian looked toward Vincent.

Then toward Celeste.

His panic deepened.

Naomi took him into custody.

The gala guests were released after questioning, and the ballroom slowly emptied.

Celeste approached Audrey.

“You knew the archive could be opened early?”

“I discovered the emergency clause while Julian forced me to read the trust documents.”

“Why did you not tell me?”

Audrey looked at her mother.

“Because everyone in my life believed I was only useful when controlled.”

Celeste accepted the rebuke.

Vincent stood several feet away.

He had not interrupted Audrey once.

“Father,” she said.

He approached.

“Do you know what else is in the archive?”

“No.”

“Mother?”

Celeste hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Audrey’s expression hardened.

“What did you hide?”

Celeste looked toward Naomi.

“We should discuss this privately.”

“No more private truths.”

The remaining cameras turned toward them.

Celeste’s face became pale.

The archive did not contain only the protected witness list.

It contained evidence of Vincent’s earliest crimes.

Not financial crimes.

Not bribery.

A killing.

Twenty-nine years earlier, before Audrey was born, Vincent had ordered the death of a rival named Samuel Vale.

Celeste had preserved the proof.

Vincent did not deny it.

Audrey looked at him.

“Why?”

“He threatened your mother.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with anger.

“He threatened to expose you. Do not rewrite it now.”

Vincent met Audrey’s gaze.

“I believed killing him would protect the family I wanted.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

Audrey lowered her head.

Naomi stepped forward.

“Vincent, once the archive opens, you will be charged.”

“I know.”

Celeste looked at him in surprise.

“You are not going to stop it?”

“No.”

For decades, Vincent had used power to prevent consequences.

Now he allowed them to arrive.

His phone rang.

Only a few people still possessed the number.

He answered.

Gabriel’s voice spoke quietly.

“You think surrender makes you noble?”

Vincent walked away from the cameras.

“Where is Richard?”

“Alive.”

“What do you want now?”

“Nothing from you.”

Gabriel laughed softly.

“I am speaking to Audrey.”

Vincent turned.

Every screen in the ballroom illuminated again.

A document appeared.

Audrey’s birth certificate.

The father’s name had been digitally enlarged.

It did not say Vincent Moretti.

It said Gabriel Moretti.

The ballroom became silent.

Audrey stared at the screen.

Vincent’s face showed no surprise.

She looked at him.

“You knew.”

He could not answer.

Celeste closed her eyes.

Audrey’s cane slipped from her hand and struck the floor.

After everything she had endured, the most devastating prison was not beneath the Thorne estate.

It was the life her parents had built around a lie.
