It rang four times before David answered, his voice backgrounded by the ambient noise of a restaurant.
"Hey, Sarah. I just finished up a lunch meeting, what's up?"
I opened my mouth, but only a dry, broken gasp came out.
"Sarah?" His tone shifted instantly, the background noise suddenly falling away.
"David," I sobbed, collapsing onto the vinyl sofa. "David, you have to come home."

"I'm driving to the airport now," he said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet.
"I'll get the first flight back to Austin."
"David, I'm so sorry—"
"Is he going to live, Sarah?" David interrupted, his voice breaking on my name.
"I don't know," I sobbed. "I don't know."

I sat alone in the beige room, holding the phone against my chest, watching the clock on the wall tick toward four o'clock.
