Chapter 18 - The Unopened Door

I couldn't sleep. I sat in the PICU waiting room as the sun began to rise over Austin.

The morning light poured through the tall glass windows, warm and golden.

Outside, the city was waking up, people driving to work, oblivious to the tragedy inside Room 4.

At seven in the morning, a female police officer approached me in the waiting room.

"Sarah Vance?"

"Yes," I stood up.

"I have a summons here from the Travis County District Attorney's office," she said, handing me a folded document.

"You are being formally charged with Injury to a Child by Omission, a second-degree felony."

"You are required to report to the district courthouse on Monday morning for booking and arraignment."

I held the paper in my trembling hands, staring at the formal black lettering.

State of Texas vs. Sarah Vance.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel fear.

I only felt a deep, overwhelming sense of justice.

I deserved whatever punishment the court decided to give me.

My crime wasn't just an omission; it was a profound failure of basic maternal protection.

I walked back down the hallway toward Room 4.

The deputy stood guard outside the door.

The moment had arrived.
