Chapter 2 – The Vacation That Changed Everything

By the time Molly pulled into the driveway, I could barely feel my fingers.
She rushed toward me without saying a word, wrapped one arm around my shoulders, and carefully took Ivy's diaper bag from my hand.
"Oh, Tessa..."
I finally broke.
Not because Brent had locked me out.
Not because I was exhausted after labor.
But because I had believed my daughter would grow up in a home filled with love.
Instead, her first memory—if memories could somehow exist this early—would begin with betrayal.
Molly's guest room became our sanctuary.
Jennifer arrived the next morning carrying three thick folders and a laptop.
"I've already spoken to Elliot."
She slid paperwork across the table.
"The buyer is still interested."
I read every page carefully.
The offer exceeded market value by nearly twelve percent.
Cash.
Ten-day closing.
No financing contingency.
The buyer wanted immediate possession.
Jennifer looked directly at me.
"You know what this means."
I nodded.
"If Brent comes home expecting to move back in..."
"He won't own anything."
Meanwhile...
Three states away...
Brent stood on the balcony of a luxury Miami hotel overlooking the ocean.
His mother, Diane, raised her champagne glass.
"I told you she'd calm down."
Brent laughed.
"She has nowhere else to go."
Karen smiled.
"She's emotional because of the baby."
Diane leaned back confidently.
"Women always come back once they realize what they have."
Brent pulled out his phone.
No missed calls.
No desperate messages.
No apologies.
"She's finally learning who makes the decisions."
None of them noticed the email sitting unopened in his inbox.
Subject: Formal Notice Regarding Property Ownership
Back in Boulder, life moved fast.
Professional photographers documented every room.
Luxury real estate agents scheduled discreet showings.
The staging company removed every personal item that belonged to Brent.
His golf clubs.
Designer suits.
Expensive watches.
His family photographs.
Everything was carefully boxed and inventoried.
Legally.
Jennifer smiled.
"We're not taking revenge."
"We're simply returning property to its rightful owner."
Late that afternoon, Brent finally texted.
How's the house?
I stared at the screen.
Then replied.
Perfectly quiet.
He answered with a laughing emoji.
Good. Maybe now you'll appreciate everything I provide.
I looked around Molly's kitchen.
Everything I provide.
The words almost made me laugh.
He had never paid a mortgage.
Never paid property taxes.
Never even contributed toward the renovations.
Yet somehow...
He believed the mansion existed because of him.
I set my phone face down.
Jennifer glanced at me.
"You ready?"
May you like
I signed the listing agreement.
"Let's sell my house."
