Chapter 5 - WHAT ETHAN HEARD

Ethan remembered the study in fragments.

Thomas speaking.

Vanessa crying angrily.

A drawer closing.

His tablet announcing that recording had started.

Then Vanessa seeing him near the door.

“She said I was spying.”

“Were you?”

“I wanted quiet.”

“I know.”

“She took the tablet. I took it back.”

“Did she mention the trust?”

He rocked slightly in the hospital chair.

“She said ‘before ten.’ Grandpa said ‘the remainder.’”

The words meant nothing to him.

They meant enough to frighten me.

Digital specialists accessed Ethan’s cloud account.

Most recent files had been deleted using the tablet after the pool incident.

A partial audio fragment remained in temporary storage.

Thomas said:

“If Laura refuses again, we document that she cannot control him.”

Vanessa answered:

“And if he keeps the recording?”

The file ended.

The deletion came from the Hale residence’s wireless network twenty-three minutes after the ambulance left.

Someone still had the tablet.

Rebecca subpoenaed Bright Path’s records.

The company had no licensed therapists, no treatment facility, and no employees besides a registered manager named Rachel Wynn.

Rachel was Vanessa’s former college roommate.

She refused to speak.

The trust payments moved through Bright Path and then into the Hale Ability Foundation, wedding vendors, and a renovation company owned by Thomas.

Partial motive.

Not the entire plan.

I made the mistake of confronting Vanessa outside the courthouse.

“Where is Ethan’s tablet?”

Reporters surrounded us.

Vanessa began crying immediately.

“She’s threatening me again.”

I stepped closer.

Rebecca pulled me back, but cameras captured the moment without the question that caused it.

Thomas used the footage in family court.

The judge left Ethan with me but warned that public confrontation could harm his recovery.

I apologized to the court.

That night, someone broke the window of my parked car.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Only the folder containing copies of Ethan’s trust statements.

On the passenger seat lay a wet photograph from the pool.

Across it, someone had written:

HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO REACH TEN.
