Chapter 9 - BRIGHT PATH

The foundation audit exposed the scale of the theft.

Bright Path billed Ethan’s trust for therapy, respite care, transportation, and residential preparation that never occurred.

Money then paid for:

Vanessa’s wedding celebration.

Thomas’s home renovations.

Legal consultations.

Private vehicles.

Foundation salaries.

Payments to Rachel Wynn.

More than six hundred thousand dollars had been diverted.

Thomas called the transactions legitimate program development.

There was no functioning program.

Rachel Wynn agreed to cooperate after prosecutors showed her the false invoices.

She admitted Vanessa paid her to maintain Bright Path as a pass-through company.

“She said the family would replace everything after the trust amendment.”

“Did she discuss Ethan’s death?” Detective Keene asked.

“No.”

“Did she discuss termination distribution?”

Rachel remembered a spreadsheet.

Vanessa said that if “the placement failed permanently,” the foundation would control the remainder.

Rachel claimed she believed that meant Ethan would transfer to another program.

Her credibility required testing.

My mother’s estate files contained a letter she had sent Thomas.

If anything happens to Ethan, the foundation must never treat his death as an opportunity. Independent trustees should oversee any remainder.

Thomas never delivered the letter to the trust bank.

He had concealed Helen’s expressed safeguard.

The tablet data produced another video fragment.

Ethan had entered the study and placed the device on a low cabinet.

The image showed only legs and the bottom of the desk.

Vanessa said:

“You told me Laura would sign before the audit.”

Thomas answered:

“She will sign when she believes the alternative is losing custody.”

“And if the tablet has the spreadsheet?”

“Get it back.”

Footsteps approached.

Ethan’s breathing accelerated.

The recording stopped when Vanessa seized the device.

The attempted drowning still appeared to be an escalation, not a documented murder plan.

Then detectives examined Vanessa’s deleted searches from the morning of the party.

How long can child survive underwater.

Autistic child drowning statistics.

Can dry drowning appear hours later.

Her attorney called them research for pool safety.

The event schedule and disabled alarm made that explanation difficult to accept.

One final trust document remained sealed by the court.

The original termination schedule.

When the judge ordered it opened, Julian Ross read the operative clause and went silent.

“If Ethan died before his tenth birthday,” he said, “the foundation would receive immediate control without the corporate review ever occurring.”
