Chapter 11 - The Confession

|

Cordelia moved closer, her shadow falling across the bed and eclipsing the dim overhead light. I felt the mattress dip slightly as she rested one white-gloved hand near my shoulder. As she leaned in to inspect my face, her diamond bracelet scraped agonizingly across my cheek. The cold metal dragged across a deep, tender bruise, sending a thin blade of white-hot pain through my skull.

I gave her absolutely nothing. I didn't flinch.

“You were never supposed to survive,” Cordelia said, her voice a soothing, conversational hum. “Do you know that? Of course you don’t. Look at you. You're nothing but a broken doll trapped in a plaster box.”

Beneath the edge of the cast, my thumb rested heavily against the hidden trigger. I waited. Timing was everything. Too soon, and the recording might only capture her throwing vicious insults. Too late, and I might be dead before Jonah and the detectives could reach the room.

Cordelia sighed, a sound of profound disappointment.

“Adrian was always weak,” she murmured, pacing slowly near the headboard. “Handsome, yes. Charming when it suited him. But fundamentally weak. His father saw it. I saw it. Then you came along with your diner-girl confidence and your little government connections, and suddenly he thought he could stand up to me. You actually made him imagine he had a spine.”

She stopped pacing. Her voice lowered to a lethal hiss.

“That was unforgivable.”

I heard the crisp rustle of expensive fabric. She was opening her leather handbag.

“You were close to something, weren’t you?” she asked the empty room. “Always poking through papers. Always asking the wrong questions. Do you know how incredibly vulgar it is, Lillian, to sit at a family dinner table and silently audit everyone?”

I pressed my thumb inward.
