The sound of my broken, raspy voice froze the entire room. Cordelia stared at me, true, unfiltered fear finally breaking through her arrogance.
Adrian dropped the coffee cups. They hit the linoleum floor with a wet smack, bursting open and sending a puddle of brown liquid spreading around his shoes.
Jonah stepped closer to my bed, looking down at Adrian. “Lillian has the offshore records, too.”
I swallowed against the agonizing pain in my throat and spoke slowly, ensuring every word was a nail in their coffins.
“Seven million dollar policy. Forged signature. Transfer from the Voss Foundation to Reeve Restoration. Cayman account under Ashbury Holdings. You used my credentials to access the audit archive.”
Cordelia began to laugh. It wasn't a sound of amusement; it was the hysterical, broken sound of a woman realizing her empire was ashes.
“You always said she was too clever,” Adrian whispered, staring at his mother in horror.

“Cordelia Voss, you are under arrest for attempted murder,” Ellison said loudly over Cordelia’s furious screams.
They took her out first. She spat vile threats until the elevator doors closed. Adrian was arrested minutes later. He was quieter, smaller, looking like a deflated balloon in his coffee-stained coat.
As the officer led him to the door, Adrian stopped and looked back at my bed.
“Lily,” he cried softly. “I loved you.”
I stared up at the fluorescent ceiling lights. I no longer owed him my gaze.

“No,” I whispered to the empty air above me. “You just loved being rescued.”
They led him away. For the first time since I had fallen from the balcony, the room was finally mine.
