Chapter 2: The Child Who Remembered Blood

The silence that followed was different.

Heavier.

Not empty.

Full.

Eli Cross had spoken twice.

And both times, the world had shifted around him like reality itself had been forced to recalculate.

Grace felt it most sharply.

Because she was standing in the middle of something she didn’t understand—

but could not walk away from anymore.

Damon stared at his son.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a king.

But as something more dangerous:

A man trying to interpret a truth he had spent years refusing to see.

“Why are you afraid of me?” he asked quietly.

Eli didn’t answer.

But his grip on Grace tightened.

That was answer enough.

Grace finally spoke.

“You didn’t just come home angry,” she said. “You came home like a storm. And he’s been living inside storms his whole life.”

Damon’s eyes flicked to her.

“You don’t know what he’s seen.”

Grace didn’t blink.

“I know what he’s becoming.”

A pause.

Then—

a sound from the shattered music box.

Click.

The final gear stopped.

Silence.

Something ended.

Damon walked slowly toward it.

Then crouched.

Picked up one broken piece of glass.

And for the first time—

his hand trembled.

“Evelyn…” he whispered.

Grace froze.

That name.

Eli reacted instantly.

His body stiffened.

His breathing changed.

And then—

a memory surfaced.

Not spoken.

Not clear.

But violent in its clarity.

Eli’s voice cracked.

“Car…”

He stopped.

Frowned.

Like the word hurt to say.

Grace looked down at him.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

Eli shook his head.

But his eyes were no longer on Damon.

They were somewhere else.

Far away.

Then he whispered something that made the entire room go cold.

“Car… pushed…”

Damon stood so fast the air shifted.

“Eli,” he said sharply. “Stop.”

But the boy wasn’t stopping.

Because something buried had just opened.

“Mommy was in the car,” Eli said, voice shaking harder now. “Not accident…”

Grace felt her stomach drop.

Damon’s face darkened instantly.

“Who told you that?” he snapped.

But Eli wasn’t finished.

His small hands clenched into fists.

“Brother…” he whispered.

Silence.

Absolute.

Even the storm outside felt distant now.

Grace slowly turned her head.

“Brother?” she repeated softly.

Eli nodded once.

Tears spilling again.

“Big brother…”

Damon’s expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Something colder.

Something lethal.

Because Damon Cross had only one brother.

Marcus.

And Marcus Cross had been declared dead years ago.

Or so the story went.

Damon stood very still.

Then said one sentence that changed the temperature of the entire house:

“Eli… tell me what you remember.”

The boy hesitated.

May you like

Then whispered:

“He pushed Mommy.”
