Chapter 10: The Child Beneath the House

The laughter came again.
Soft.
Clear.
Close.
Not electronic.
Not distorted.
It echoed through the stone beneath their feet like the sound had traveled through old tunnels hidden below the estate.
Grace instinctively pulled Eli behind her.
"Did you hear that?"
Damon nodded without speaking.
For the first time in years, the man who had negotiated billion-dollar mergers and stared down ruthless competitors looked genuinely afraid.
Marcus did not answer.
He was listening.
Counting.
Waiting.
When the laughter came a third time, he closed his eyes.
"...She's moving."
Grace frowned.
"Who?"
Marcus opened his eyes.
"The girl."
A low vibration rolled through the archive.
One of the metal filing cabinets trembled.
Then another.
A section of shelving slowly shifted away from the wall.
Behind it was not another room.
It was an elevator.
Old.
Industrial.
Its iron doors were covered in faded warning symbols.
Above the frame, nearly erased by time, were three words:
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
Damon stared.
"There are tunnels beneath my house."
Marcus corrected him.
"No."
"There is a facility beneath your house."
The elevator bell chimed once.
Its doors slid open by themselves.
Inside, the lights were already on.
Waiting.
No one had pressed a button.
Grace looked toward Marcus.
"Please tell me we're not getting inside."
Marcus studied the elevator for several seconds.
"They've invited us."
"That's exactly why we shouldn't."
He reached into his pocket and removed a small silver coin engraved with the same black circle Eli had described.
Damon frowned.
"You have one of their symbols."
Marcus nodded.
"I kept it."
"Why?"
"So I would never forget what I escaped."
He flipped the coin into the elevator.
It landed with a metallic ring.
Nothing happened.
Marcus exhaled.
"No pressure sensors."
"No explosives."
"They want us alive."
Eli stared into the elevator.
"I've ridden this before."
Grace looked horrified.
"You couldn't have."
The boy shook his head slowly.
"I was holding Mommy's hand."
His voice became distant.
"She was crying."
The image struck Damon like a blow.
Evelyn.
Crying.
Holding Eli's hand.
Descending beneath the house.
Not running away.
Going somewhere deliberately.
He whispered,
"Why?"
Marcus answered without looking at him.
"To protect someone."
The elevator suddenly spoke.
A calm female voice echoed from hidden speakers.
"Destination confirmed."
Everyone froze.
"There has been one surviving memory restoration."
"Welcome back..."
A pause.
"...Subject Evelyn."
Grace's eyes widened.
"It thinks she's here."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"No."
"It recognizes her bloodline."
He looked at Eli.
"It's recognizing him."
The elevator doors began to close.
Without warning.
Grace lunged forward and blocked them with her arm.
The doors stopped instantly.
No resistance.
Almost...
Respectfully.
Marcus noticed.
"So."
"They've changed the protocol."
Damon looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Eli isn't a prisoner anymore."
"He has clearance."
Silence settled over the room.
That realization frightened Marcus more than anything they had discovered so far.
Because clearance meant authority.
Authority meant purpose.
And purpose meant someone had been preparing for this day long before Eli could speak.
Damon finally stepped into the elevator.
"I'm done running from ghosts."
Grace looked at him.
"This could be exactly what they want."
"I know."
"Then why go?"
He looked at his son.
"Because if someone built an entire world around my family..."
"I need to know why."
One by one, they entered.
Marcus last.
The doors sealed shut.
Instead of buttons, the control panel displayed only one line of glowing text.
LEVEL -4
Then the elevator began to descend.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Far longer than the depth of any normal basement.
Grace felt the pressure change in her ears.
"We're too deep."
Marcus nodded.
"This mansion was never built on bedrock."
"It was built over something."
The elevator finally stopped.
The doors opened onto a wide concrete corridor illuminated by soft white lights.
Everything looked immaculate.
As though the facility had never been abandoned.
No dust.
No rust.
No decay.
Only silence.
At the end of the corridor stood a single woman.
Perhaps in her late sixties.
Silver hair tied neatly behind her head.
Dark blue suit.
Hands folded calmly in front of her.
She smiled as if greeting expected guests.
"Good evening."
Her voice was warm.
Almost grandmotherly.
"My name is Dr. Miriam Vale."
Grace stepped in front of Eli.
"Who are you?"
The woman inclined her head politely.
"I was Evelyn's teacher."
Damon's entire body went rigid.
"My wife never mentioned you."
Dr. Vale smiled faintly.
"No."
"We removed that memory."
The words landed with terrifying simplicity.
As if she had said she had changed a light bulb.
Marcus stared at her.
"I watched the records."
"I saw you die."
Dr. Vale looked at him with genuine sympathy.
"Marcus..."
"People like us are permitted many deaths."
She took one slow step forward.
Then looked directly at Eli.
For the first time, her smile became unmistakably emotional.
"There you are."
"We've been waiting for you..."
"...and for your sister."
Every muscle in Damon's body froze.
Grace's heart pounded.
Eli whispered,
"I told you..."
"...she's real."
May you like
From somewhere beyond the brightly lit corridor, a little girl's voice called out joyfully—
"Eli! You finally came back!"
