Chapter 11: The Girl Who Was Erased

"Eli! You finally came back!"

The little girl's voice echoed down the white corridor.

It wasn't distorted by speakers.

It wasn't a recording.

It was alive.

Eli took one instinctive step forward.

Grace caught his hand immediately.

"No."

The boy looked up at her, tears filling his eyes.

"But she's crying."

Grace listened.

Beyond the first joyful call...

there it was.

Soft sobbing.

As though someone had spent years waiting for a door that never opened.

Dr. Miriam Vale remained perfectly still.

"You don't have to be afraid."

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

"That's exactly what you said twenty-three years ago."

Dr. Vale met his eyes.

"And yet you're still alive."

"Barely."

"You survived."

Marcus's voice hardened.

"I escaped."

Dr. Vale shook her head.

"No."

"We let you believe you did."

Silence.

For the first time, Marcus had no immediate response.

Damon stepped forward.

"I have one question."

Dr. Vale smiled politely.

"I know."

"Ask it."

His voice trembled with anger.

"Where is my wife?"

The smile faded.

For several seconds, Dr. Vale simply looked at him.

Then she answered.

"I honestly don't know."

Grace frowned.

"You're lying."

"No."

Dr. Vale's expression remained calm.

"Evelyn stopped reporting to us eleven years ago."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"She disappeared."

Dr. Vale nodded.

"Yes."

"Before anyone could stop her."

Damon felt hope flicker for the first time.

"So she escaped."

Dr. Vale looked almost impressed.

"Perhaps."

"Or perhaps she found something even we couldn't predict."

"What?"

She answered with a single word.

"Choice."

The corridor lights dimmed briefly.

Emergency lighting flickered on.

Somewhere deeper inside the facility, an alarm sounded.

Not loud.

Controlled.

Dr. Vale frowned for the first time.

"...Interesting."

Marcus noticed immediately.

"What's happening?"

She looked toward the far end of the hallway.

"Someone has entered."

Damon stared.

"We're the only ones here."

Dr. Vale slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Someone else used another entrance."

A monitor on the wall suddenly activated.

Black-and-white security footage filled the screen.

A lone figure walked through another corridor.

Tall.

Wearing a gray coat.

Face hidden beneath a hood.

Grace whispered,

"The man."

Marcus watched carefully.

"No."

"This one walks differently."

The figure stopped beneath a camera.

Then deliberately looked up.

A familiar face appeared.

Older.

Bearded.

Tired.

Damon frowned.

"I know him..."

Marcus inhaled sharply.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Grace looked between them.

"Who is he?"

Marcus answered almost reverently.

"Adrian Holt."

The room fell silent.

The forgotten name from the archive.

The man Marcus had called...

the last honest painter.

Only now he wasn't carrying brushes.

He carried a weathered leather case.

Dr. Vale's calm composure finally cracked.

"Impossible."

Marcus looked at her.

"You said he became invisible."

"I believed he had."

On the monitor, Adrian spoke directly into the nearest security camera.

His voice was rough with age.

"If you're watching..."

"...I'm already too late."

The feed abruptly cut to static.

A second alarm began to sound.

Much louder.

Red lights washed over the corridor.

A computerized voice echoed throughout the facility.

ARCHIVE BREACH DETECTED.

PRIMARY RECORDS COMPROMISED.

Dr. Vale whispered under her breath,

"No..."

Marcus looked at her.

"What records?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she turned and hurried down the corridor.

Marcus grabbed her arm.

"What aren't you telling us?"

For the first time since they had met her...

fear filled her eyes.

"If Adrian reached the Origin Vault..."

She looked directly at Eli.

"...then every erased child will be remembered."

Grace blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Dr. Vale's voice broke.

"It means history will stop agreeing with itself."

The lights flickered again.

Then every screen in the corridor activated at once.

Hundreds of photographs appeared.

Children.

Thousands of them.

Different decades.

Different countries.

Every image carried the same black-circle symbol in one corner.

Grace slowly realized something horrifying.

Each picture showed...

one child carefully crossed out.

As if they had once stood with their families...

and had later been removed.

Not physically.

Historically.

Marcus whispered,

"My God..."

Damon stared in disbelief.

"How many?"

Dr. Vale answered quietly.

"We stopped counting after twelve thousand."

Silence crushed the corridor.

Grace felt Eli grip her hand tighter.

The boy looked at one photograph near the center of the wall.

His breathing stopped.

He slowly lifted a shaking finger.

"There..."

Everyone followed his gaze.

A family portrait from twelve years earlier.

Damon.

Evelyn.

Little Eli.

And standing beside them...

holding Eli's hand...

was the smiling little girl from the screens.

The caption beneath the photograph read:

THE CROSS FAMILY

CHILDREN: ELIAS AND ELENA CROSS

Damon's knees gave way.

He collapsed onto the cold floor.

Because somewhere deep inside him...

May you like

a memory he had never been allowed to keep...

had just begun to return.
