Chapter 10 - THE HEALING WOUNDS

-2-

The morning sun warmed the study as Julian stood facing Marisol, the lingering shadows of the past finally retreating from the room. He reached out, his large, calloused hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently resting on her shoulder. "When I hired you," Julian said, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion, "I thought you were just another temporary employee who would pack her bags within forty-eight hours like the rest of them. I didn't know you were the anchor that was going to keep this entire family from drowning." Marisol looked up into his dark, searching eyes, her gaze steady and unblinking. "Sometimes, Mr. Mercer—Julian—it takes someone from outside the storm to see where the shelter actually is."

Before Julian could reply, the rapid, pattering sound of small footsteps echoed down the hallway outside the study. A split second later, Toby burst through the open doorway, rubbing his sleepy eyes with one hand while clutching a worn blue stuffed bear in the other. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw his father standing close to Marisol, blinking in confusion before a bright, tentative smile broke across his face. "Daddy?" Toby mumbled sleepily, his voice small and sweet in the quiet room. Julian didn't hesitate. He dropped down immediately onto one knee, opening his arms wide, and for the first time in over a year, his youngest son ran straight into his embrace, burying his face in Julian’s neck with a fierce, unconditional squeeze.

Julian wrapped his arms tightly around the little boy, burying his face in Toby's soft brown hair as a heavy, shuddering sigh escaped his lips. The cold, calculated mafia boss vanished entirely, leaving only a father holding his world back together. A moment later, Sam and Leo appeared in the doorway, walking more slowly, watching the scene with cautious, hopeful eyes. Julian looked up from Toby, extending his other arm toward his older sons without a word. Sam didn't wait—he rushed forward, diving into his father's side, while Leo walked up more slowly, a quiet dignity in his stride, before finally letting out a shaky breath and leaning his head against Julian’s shoulder.

Marisol stood quietly by the bookshelf, watching the embrace with a soft, misty smile, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She turned slightly toward the door, quietly preparing to give them space, but Julian’s hand shot out, catching her wrist with a gentle, restraining grip. "Don't go," Julian said, looking up at her with his sons still tangled in his arms. "You're part of this family now, Marisol. That is... if you're willing to stay." Leo raised his head, looking between his father and Marisol with big, earnest eyes. "Please stay, Marisol," Leo whispered, echoing the exact words he had spoken weeks ago in the dark. "Don't ever leave us." Marisol looked down at the three boys, then up at Julian, whose dark eyes held a silent, powerful promise of a brand-new beginning. She offered a radiant, beautiful smile, slipped her hand smoothly into Julian’s free hand, and nodded. "I'm not going anywhere," she whispered softly.
