Chapter 7 - THE COURTYARD WAR

The grand staircase of the Mercer estate looked like a war zone. Plaster dust, shattered glass, and spent brass casings littered the polished marble steps where moonlight poured in through the broken skylights above. Julian descended into the dark foyer with the cold, deliberate focus of an apex predator. Through the smashed double doors of the front entrance, the cold night air rushed in, carrying the scent of burning rubber and gasoline. Outside on the sprawling stone courtyard, an armored black delivery van was parked directly in front of the grand fountain, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically. Standing beside the driver's side door, holding a heavy assault rifle in one hand and a portable megaphone in the other, was Marcus Vance.
Dressed in an immaculate gray suit that stood out sharply against the tactical gear of the remaining four mercenaries flanking him, Marcus looked like a corporate executive overseeing a hostile takeover. "Come out, Julian!" Marcus shouted into the megaphone, a manic edge creeping into his smooth, polished voice. "You're outgunned, outmaneuvered, and completely out of time! Your empire belongs to me now!" Julian stepped out onto the top of the stone portico, his silhouette framed sharply against the pale moonlight. He didn't raise his voice, but the terrifying authority in his tone cut cleanly through the night air like a razor blade. "You made one fatal mistake, Marcus," Julian called out, resting the heavy barrel of his assault shotgun casually across his shoulder. "You thought I wouldn't notice the rat in my own house."
Marcus lowered the megaphone, a dark, venomous snarl twisting his aristocratic features. He raised his assault rifle, pointing it directly at Julian’s chest. "Kill him!" Marcus screeched to his remaining mercenaries. "Light him up!" Before the mercenaries could even shoulder their weapons, the darkness of the surrounding tree line suddenly erupted with flashes of muzzle fire. Viktor Vance—Julian’s fiercely loyal head of security, who had managed to break through the estate's outer perimeter with a tactical strike team of his own—opened fire from the shadows of the ancient oak trees. A hail of accurate, suppressing fire cut down two of Marcus’s guards instantly, sending them crashing onto the cobblestone courtyard.

The remaining two mercenaries scrambled desperately for cover behind the armored van, returning wild, blind fire toward the tree line while Marcus cursed loudly, diving behind the thick steel door of the vehicle for protection. Julian didn't wait for Viktor to finish clearing the courtyard. He vaulted over the stone railing of the portico, dropping ten feet straight down onto the hood of a parked luxury sedan with a dull thump, then rolling smoothly onto the cobblestones and sprinting directly toward the armored van. Bullets ricocheted off the stone pavement inches from his boots, sending lethal sparks flying into the night air, but Julian didn't slow down. He closed the distance with terrifying speed, his eyes locked entirely on the terrified, sweating face of Marcus Vance peeking out from behind the van's open door.
"Traitor!" Julian roared, lunging forward just as Marcus raised his pistol for a desperate, point-blank shot. Julian smashed the heavy stock of his shotgun directly into Marcus’s wrist, sending the handgun clattering across the stone pavement into the shadows. Marcus let out a high-pitched shriek of pain, stumbling backward and tripping over his own expensive shoes, crashing hard onto his back against the wet cobblestones. Julian stood over him, the cold, black barrel of his shotgun pressing firmly against the center of Marcus’s forehead, the hammer cocked back with a sharp, echoing click that signaled the end of the line.
