Chapter 6 - THE BREACH AT MIDNIGHT

The explosive charge detonated with a deafening, concussion-wave blast that blew the heavy wooden bedroom door completely off its reinforced steel hinges, sending jagged splinters flying across the room like shrapnel. Inside the pitch-black bedroom, Marisol threw her body over the sleeping boys, shielding them with her own frame as a thick cloud of acrid smoke and dust billowed into the space. Through the haze, two black-clad operatives stepped over the splintered wreckage of the doorway, their tactical flashlights cutting through the gloom, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with lethal efficiency.
"Clear!" one of the operatives barked into his comms unit, stepping further into the bedroom. "Target area secured. Caregiver and brats are cornered on the bed." The second mercenary lowered his rifle slightly, stepping forward with a pair of heavy nylon zip-ties clutched in his gloved hand. He reached down toward the bed where Marisol was shielding the trembling children, a cruel smirk hidden behind his ballistic mask. "Don't make this difficult, sweetheart," the mercenary growled, grabbing Marisol by the arm to yank her away from the boys. "Marcus wants it clean, but accidents happen all the time in a burning—"
He never finished the sentence. From the shadows behind the shattered doorframe, a single, suppressed gunshot cracked through the room with surgical precision. A 9mm hollow-point round punched straight through the mercenary's helmet visor, and he collapsed instantly onto the rug without a sound. The second operative spun around in sheer panic, his rifle swinging wildly toward the doorway, but Julian was already there. Emerging from the smoke like an apparition of vengeance, Julian fired twice into the operative's chest, dropping him hard to the floor before he could squeeze his own trigger.
Julian rushed into the bedroom, holstering his smoking pistol as he crossed the room in two long strides and dropped to his knees beside the bed. "Are you alright?" he demanded, his hands gently gripping Marisol’s shoulders, his dark eyes scanning her frantically for any sign of injury. Marisol let out a shaky, ragged breath, nodding as she pulled a terrified Leo and Sam closer to her chest. "We're... we're okay," she stammered, looking up at Julian with a mixture of awe and absolute disbelief. "You... you cleared the hallway?" Julian gave a grim, humorless nod, his jaw tight as he stood up and pulled a heavy tactical shotgun off one of the fallen operatives. "The advance team is neutralized," Julian said coldly. "But Marcus is down in the courtyard. He just pulled up in an armored van, and he's broadcasting an open radio frequency across the entire estate network."

As if on cue, a harsh, static-laced voice echoed through the mansion's integrated intercom speakers, carrying Marcus Vance's smug, arrogant tones into every corner of the estate: "Julian! I know you're listening, you arrogant bastard. You can't fight an entire army by yourself. Surrender the boys and the girl now, and I’ll give you a clean, painless exit. Otherwise, I'm burning this entire cursed estate to the ground—starting with the east wing, just like I did twelve years ago with your precious wife!" The confession echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the mansion, chilling the air to absolute zero. Leo let out a terrified sob, burying his face in Marisol's chest, while Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. The mask of the businessman, the syndicate boss, and the grieving widower shattered completely, leaving only a father ready to tear the world apart to protect his children.
"Stay here," Julian commanded, looking down at Marisol with an intensity that brooked no argument. He pulled a heavy combat knife from his belt and handed it to her handle-first. "If anyone other than me or Viktor comes through that door, you put this blade in them." Before Marisol could protest, Julian turned on his heel and strode out of the bedroom into the ruined hallway, stepping over the bodies of the fallen mercenaries as he headed straight toward the grand staircase. Marcus wanted a final showdown? Julian was going to give him one—and he was going to deliver it straight to hell.
