PART 1 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The modern family estate sat in complete silence beneath the dark night sky.

Towering oak trees surrounded the massive property, their branches swaying gently in the cool evening breeze. Soft lights glowed along the stone walkway leading to the front entrance, while only a handful of hallway lamps illuminated the enormous house. From the outside, it looked peaceful—a luxurious home where nothing bad could possibly happen.

Inside, terror had already taken over.

The silence was shattered by the sound of labored breathing coming from the kitchen.

A frightened woman lay helplessly on the cold white marble floor. Her chest rose and fell unevenly as she struggled for every breath. One side of her face was bruised, and strands of dark hair clung to the tears running down her cheeks. Every attempt to crawl away ended with another wave of pain shooting through her body.

Standing over her was a large man whose shadow stretched across the polished floor beneath the bright kitchen lights.

His breathing was heavy.

His fists were clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

His eyes burned with rage.

"You should have listened to me," he growled, taking another threatening step toward her.

The woman tried to push herself backward, but her strength was fading.

She knew she couldn't outrun him.

She knew she couldn't fight him.

Then her eyes shifted across the room.

Standing near the kitchen doorway was her seven-year-old daughter.

Lily.

The little girl wore a simple purple nightgown decorated with tiny white stars. Her bare feet trembled against the cold floor as tears filled her frightened blue eyes. She had never seen her mother like this before.

Everything felt unreal.

Only minutes earlier, she had been asleep in her bedroom upstairs.

Then the shouting had awakened her.

She had quietly opened her bedroom door.

She had followed the angry voices downstairs.

Now she wished she hadn't.

"D...Daddy..." Lily whispered, her voice barely audible.

The man turned his head.

For just a second, his furious expression changed as he noticed the little girl standing there.

"Lily," he said sharply. "Go back to your room."

His voice wasn't calm.

It was a command.

The kind that made children obey without asking questions.

Lily couldn't move.

Her eyes stayed fixed on her mother.

The injured woman forced herself onto one elbow despite the pain. Every movement sent agony through her body, but none of that mattered now.

Only Lily mattered.

She had to protect her daughter.

No matter what happened to herself.

She looked directly into Lily's frightened eyes.

There wasn't enough strength left to scream.

There wasn't enough air left to explain.

With trembling lips, she whispered only two words.

"Go now."

Lily froze.

The world around her suddenly became silent.

She could hear only her own heartbeat pounding inside her ears.

Her mother's frightened face.

The man's towering figure.

The cold kitchen floor.

Everything blurred together.

For one terrifying moment, she didn't know what to do.

Run?

Stay?

Help her mother?

She was only seven years old.

She had never imagined that one decision could change everything.

The man suddenly realized where the woman's eyes were focused.

He looked toward Lily again.

His expression hardened instantly.

"No," he muttered.

His voice carried something far more dangerous than anger.

Fear.

He knew exactly what the little girl might be trying to do.

Lily remembered something her mother had shown her months earlier.

A silver security keypad mounted on the hallway wall.

A four-digit emergency code.

"If you're ever scared and Mommy can't help you," her mother had once said gently, "run to the keypad and enter these numbers. Don't stop. Don't look back."

At the time, Lily had laughed, believing it was only another safety game.

Now she understood.

It had never been a game.

The little girl's trembling fingers slowly curled into tiny fists.

She wiped away her tears with the sleeve of her nightgown.

Then, without saying another word...

She turned—

—and ran as fast as her little legs could carry her.

Her small footsteps echoed through the silent hallway, each one racing against time.

Behind her, the sound of a furious roar exploded through the house.

"What are you doing?" the man shouted.

A heartbeat later...

May you like

Heavy footsteps thundered after her.
