PART 2 — THE RACE TO THE KEYPAD

The sound of Lily's tiny footsteps echoed through the silent mansion.
She had never run this fast before.
The long marble hallway seemed endless as she sprinted barefoot beneath the dim ceiling lights. Every frightened breath burned inside her lungs, but she refused to stop.
Behind her, another sound grew louder.
Heavy footsteps.
Fast.
Violent.
Closing the distance.
"What are you doing?" the man roared.
His voice shook the quiet house.
Lily didn't dare look back.
She remembered what her mother had always told her whenever they practiced emergency drills.
"If you ever have to run... never stop to see who's behind you."
Tears blurred her vision as she rounded the corner toward the central hallway.
There.
Mounted beside a framed family photograph was the silver security keypad.
Only a few more steps.
The keypad suddenly felt impossibly far away.
Behind her, the pounding footsteps became even louder.
The man had almost reached her.
"Lily!" he shouted.
"Stop right now!"
She ignored him.
Every instinct told her to keep moving.
She reached the wall, grabbing the edge of the wooden cabinet to keep herself from slipping across the polished marble floor.
The keypad glowed softly in the darkness.
Her tiny hands were shaking so badly she almost couldn't raise them.
For one terrifying second...
Her mind went completely blank.
The numbers.
What were the numbers?
She squeezed her eyes shut.
Then she remembered.
Several months earlier, her mother had knelt beside this very wall.
Smiling.
Patient.
"Let's pretend this is a secret mission," her mother had said.
"If Mommy ever tells you to run, come here first."
Lily had giggled.
"What if I forget?"
"You won't," her mother had answered, gently touching her forehead.
"Because brave people remember important things."
Now those words echoed inside Lily's mind.
She lifted one trembling finger.
The first number.
Beep.
Another finger.
The second number.
Beep.
Behind her—
The man rounded the corner.
His eyes widened the instant he saw what she was doing.
"No!"
He lunged forward.
His shoes slammed against the marble floor as he sprinted toward her.
Lily didn't stop.
The third number.
Beep.
The man was only a few feet away now.
His arm stretched toward her.
"Lily!"
The fourth number.
Beep.
For one long second...
Nothing happened.
Lily's heart stopped.
Had she entered the wrong code?
Then—
A loud confirmation tone echoed throughout the mansion.
ACCESS ACCEPTED.
Almost immediately, a piercing emergency alarm began sounding through every hallway.
Red indicator lights flashed across the security panel.
Somewhere outside, powerful floodlights illuminated the entire property.
Hidden security cameras automatically activated.
Emergency signals were transmitted to the home's monitoring center.
The man froze.
His furious expression instantly changed.
Not to anger.
To panic.
"No..."
He whispered the word as if he already knew what would happen next.
The security company had been programmed to contact emergency responders immediately whenever that code was entered.
They were already coming.
His face twisted with desperation.
Without another thought, he charged directly at Lily.
"If I stop you now..."
He never finished the sentence.
Lily stumbled backward.
Her small body hit the hallway cabinet.
For a split second, fear almost overwhelmed her.
Then she remembered something else.
Another lesson.
Not about the keypad.
About the cabinet.
Months ago, her mother had quietly shown her a small compartment hidden inside one of the drawers.
"If anyone ever tries to hurt you before help arrives," she had whispered, "this is only for emergencies."
At the time, Lily hadn't understood why a family home would need something like that.
Now she did.
Her hand reached toward the cabinet.
The drawer slid open.
Inside rested a small emergency defense spray.
The silver canister fit perfectly into her tiny hand.
The man was almost on top of her.
His fingers stretched toward her shoulder.
"Lily!"
She pulled the safety tab free.
Her hands were still trembling.
But this time...
She didn't hesitate.
She raised the spray directly toward his face.
"Stay away from me!"
The man lunged forward—
May you like
Just as Lily pressed the trigger.
