PART 3 — THE BRAVEST STAND

The instant Lily pressed the trigger, a powerful stream of white mist burst from the small silver canister.

The spray struck the man directly across his eyes before he had time to turn away.

"Aaagh!"

His scream exploded through the hallway.

He stumbled backward, grabbing his face with both hands as the burning sensation overwhelmed him. His eyes slammed shut, and he gasped for air, coughing violently while trying to wipe away the irritating mist.

"I can't see!"

He staggered blindly into the hallway wall, knocking over a decorative table. A porcelain vase crashed onto the marble floor, shattering into dozens of sharp pieces.

Lily stood frozen.

The spray bottle was still clutched tightly in her tiny hands.

Her whole body trembled.

She had never hurt anyone before.

She hadn't wanted to.

She only wanted him to stop.

The man continued stumbling through the hallway, completely disoriented.

He took another step.

Then another.

His foot slipped on a piece of broken porcelain.

With a loud thud, his large body slammed heavily onto the polished marble floor.

The impact echoed throughout the house.

For several seconds, he groaned, still clutching his burning eyes.

Then...

Everything became quiet.

His body stopped moving.

The only sounds left were Lily's rapid breathing and the piercing emergency alarm still echoing through the mansion.

She didn't know if he was unconscious.

She didn't know if he would suddenly stand up again.

She wasn't willing to find out.

Keeping the spray pointed toward him, Lily slowly backed away.

Her heart pounded so hard she thought it might burst.

Then she remembered her mother.

"Mom!"

Without taking her eyes off the fallen man, Lily hurried back toward the kitchen.

She found her mother exactly where she had left her, still lying on the cold marble floor.

The woman looked up as Lily rushed inside.

Relief flooded her tear-filled eyes.

"Lily..."

"I'm here, Mom."

The little girl dropped to her knees beside her.

Her mother reached out with trembling hands and gently cupped Lily's face.

"Are you hurt?"

Lily shook her head.

"I... I did what you told me."

Fresh tears rolled down her mother's cheeks.

"You were so brave."

Before Lily could answer, another loud sound filled the night.

A distant siren.

Then another.

And another.

Both of them listened.

The sounds grew louder with every passing second.

Help was coming.

Outside the mansion, red and blue emergency lights began flashing through the tall front windows, painting the walls with pulses of color.

The home's security system had done exactly what it was designed to do.

The emergency code had automatically alerted the monitoring center.

Police officers.

Paramedics.

Emergency responders.

They were all on their way.

Lily wrapped both arms around her mother.

"It's okay," she whispered, even though her own voice was shaking.

"They're coming."

Her mother smiled weakly through the pain.

"I knew... you would remember."

Lily helped support her mother's shoulders as they slowly moved away from the kitchen doorway.

Neither of them looked toward the unconscious man lying in the hallway.

They simply waited.

Seconds felt like hours.

Every distant siren sounded closer than the last.

Finally—

Bright headlights swept across the front windows.

Car doors slammed outside.

Urgent voices filled the front yard.

"Police!"

"We're coming in!"

The front door burst open.

Several officers rushed into the house, carefully scanning every room before moving toward the hallway.

One officer immediately spotted the man lying motionless on the floor.

Another hurried toward Lily and her mother.

"It's okay," the officer said calmly, lowering his flashlight. "You're safe now."

Behind him, paramedics entered carrying emergency medical equipment.

They knelt beside Lily's mother and quickly began checking her injuries.

Lily refused to let go of her mother's hand.

Even as the house filled with officers, flashing lights, and hurried voices...

She stayed exactly where she was.

Standing between her injured mother...

And the man who would never frighten them again.
