Chapter 9 - The Breach

The explosion was deafening. The shockwave blew the bulletproof glass inward, shattering it into a million deadly pieces. The blast knocked me off my feet, the sound ringing in my ears like a church bell.

Smoke and fire poured into the observation booth. I heard Marcus scream.

Vance was already on her feet, pulling me up. "Go! Get them out!"

I herded the six children through the shattered remains of the booth. The facility was in total chaos. The fire from the cornfield had reached the main building, triggering the sprinkler systems.

As we reached the main lobby, Dr. Aris stumbled out of the smoke, his white coat covered in soot, clutching a briefcase.

He looked at me, his eyes wide with fear. "Nolan, please. I have millions in here. We can split it."

I didn't say a word. I stepped forward and drove a right hook into his jaw, putting every ounce of the anger, grief, and terror of the last forty-eight hours into the punch. Aris crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out. A bullet grazed my shoulder, tearing through my scrubs.

Marcus emerged from the smoke, half his face burned from the explosion, aiming his weapon right at my chest.

"You ruined everything!" he roared.

Before he could pull the trigger again, two deafening shots echoed through the lobby. Marcus froze, dropped his gun, and fell to his knees before collapsing face-first onto the marble floor.

Vance stood behind him, her weapon smoking. "I told you," she panted, lowering her gun. "He's a ghost."
