Chapter 11 - The Verdict Falls

|

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity on the morning of the sentencing. Reporters spilled out into the hallways, cameras flashed relentlessly outside the courthouse steps, and the tension inside the room was so thick it felt almost suffocating.

I sat in the second row, wearing a simple navy dress, my father sitting quietly beside me holding my hand. Nora was back home with Evelyn, but her heart and mind were right here with us.

The heavy wooden side doors opened, and the judge entered. Everyone rose in unison.

Federal Judge Sterling—no relation to the corrupt developer—scanned the courtroom with a severe, unyielding expression before taking his seat.

"We are here today for the sentencing of Arthur Vance and Julian Vance," Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the quiet room. "The financial devastation these defendants have inflicted upon thousands of innocent employees, investors, and dependents is nothing short of catastrophic. Greed on this scale demands a severe and uncompromising response from the court."

My heart hammered against my ribs as I looked toward the defense table.

Arthur Vance sat rigidly, his face carved from stone, refusing to show a single crack in his arrogant facade. Julian looked down at his lap, his shoulders slumped, the picture of defeated misery.

"Arthur Vance," the judge said, locking his eyes on the older man. "For your leading role in orchestrating a massive, multi-million-dollar wire fraud, securities manipulation, and pension theft scheme, I sentence you to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Twenty-five years. At Arthur’s age, that was a life sentence. He didn't flinch, but his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek.

Judge Sterling then turned his piercing gaze toward Julian.

"Julian Vance. You actively participated in this conspiracy, abusing your corporate position and betraying the trust of the public, your investors, and your own family. Furthermore, your actions of targeted physical violence during the federal investigation are an aggravating factor this court cannot ignore."

Julian looked up, his eyes wide with desperate panic.

"For these crimes," the judge continued, raising his gavel, "I sentence you to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

Bang.

The gavel struck the wood with a sharp, final crack.

Fifteen years.

Julian’s face crumpled entirely, and he dropped his head into his hands, letting out a ragged, miserable groan. U.S. marshals immediately stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Arthur and Julian, and marched them out through the side doors.

I watched them go, feeling no malice, no triumph, and no anger.

Just a profound, insurmountable sense of peace. The storm had finally passed, and the monsters had been locked away where they could never hurt anyone again.
